Former UNLV football coach Jeff Horton will serve as the interim head coach at the University of Minnesota for the remainder of the year.

Horton, formerly Minnesota’s offensive coordinator, was promoted Sunday when the university fired Tim Brewster following the Golden Gophers’ 1-6 start.

Horton was UNLV’s head coach from 1994 to 1998, leading the Rebels to the Big West Conference title and a Las Vegas Bowl victory in 1994.

“My job is to instill confidence in them,” Horton said. “Get them to go out and play as hard as they can for as long as they can, and help them try to achieve victory.”

Horton was fired in 1998 after leading the Rebels to an 0-11 record.

He has since been an assistant coach at Wisconsin, and in the NFL with the Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams.

Brewster, who hired in 2007, went 15-30.
