Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010 | 4:26 a.m.
Edmundo “Eddie” Escobedo, founder and publisher of El Mundo Spanish-language newspaper and president of the Mexican Patriotic Committee, died Friday afternoon.
The 77-year-old former president of the National Association of Hispanic Publications and a respected figure of the Hispanic community was with his wife, children and close family members during his final moments at Sunrise Hospital.
“He enjoyed a long and adventurous life living the American dream,” Escobedo’s son Edmundo Escobedo Jr. said in announcing his father’s death.
Besides being the founder and publisher of El Mundo, Escobedo was a columnist for the newspaper writing pieces Sen. Harry Reid described as “incisive.”
“Yes, he wrote incisive columns. He knew this town inside and out,” Reid said in a statement. “But it was his big heart that made him the outstanding community leader he was.”
Escobedo is survived by his wife, Maria, his children, Eddie Jr., Hilda, Nicolas and Victor, and grandchildren.
Services will be announced at a later date.

About 25 years ago this man offered me a position in sales with his news paper, Though I didn't speak a lick of Spanish, he believed in my ability to help expand into the local market. I didn't accept it, but wish I had. He was a beautiful man. His love and compassion for all people is what made the El Mundo the popular paper it is today.
Las Vegas has lost a great man. He will be greatly missed. I was luckly to have had the oppurtunity to have met Eddie and for him to share his knowledge with me not only as a businessowner, but also showed me what a big heart he had for his family and the community. Our sincere sympathy goes out to his family
Descanse en paz Sr. Edmundo.
Tanks a lot for your courage and help to Hispanic community.
It's a immense lost not only for the Latino people, for all Las Vegas community.
God bless you.
Dios lo vendiga.
