$4.3 million project to make some downtown Las Vegas streets one-way

Road project

Downtown Las Vegas will soon have two more one-way streets, with work on a five-block section of the roads beginning Wednesday.

The city is converting Bonneville and Clark avenues into one-way streets between Las Vegas Boulevard and Main Street; Bonneville will handle eastbound travel and Clark will carry westbound traffic.

The $4.3 million project to change the streets includes removing and replacing the roadway on both streets, installing new curbs and gutters, landscaping, upgrading traffic signals and new road striping, city officials said.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin Wednesday and end in August 2011.

“This long-awaited project will improve traffic flow and circulation in downtown Las Vegas, and it is a critical component of our downtown redevelopment plan,” said Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese, who represents the area, in a statement.

The new road configuration is in the same area as the Regional Justice Center; the new Bonneville Transit Center, which is scheduled to open in November; and the new City Hall, which is under construction.

During construction, motorists should expect lane restrictions on the two streets. There may also be temporary restrictions on the north-south roads near Bonneville and Clark.

Most of the work will take place during the day, but some overnight work may be necessary, officials said. Funding for the project is coming from the Regional Transportation Commission and Tand Inc. is the contractor.
