The recent deaths of two motorcyclists prompted Metro Police to hold a news conference Friday to emphasize safe driving and riding.

“Motorcyclists are on the road; you need to be cognizant,” Metro officer Michael Lemley said. “They’re a smaller vehicle and easy to look past.”

In total, 12 motorcycle riders have died in accidents this year. By this time last year, there had been 15 motorcycle fatalities.

Lemley met with reporters at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Pearl Street, where a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and a van occurred Wednesday afternoon.

Not enough motorcyclists in Nevada have received formal training and likely learned to Lemley said he didn’t have data on whether drivers or motorcyclists were most often at fault for accidents, but everyone needs to obey the rules of the road.

He urged motorcycle riders to wear jeans, long-sleeved shirts and helmets while riding. Those simple safety precautions should reduce the risk of injury, he said.
