Sophomore Donnel Pumphrey had three touchdown runs and about 150 rushing yards Friday to lead the host Canyon Springs High football team to a 42-14 victory against Rancho.
Canyon Springs didn’t allow any points in the second half.
“The second half is the best half I’ve seen us put together,” Canyon Springs coach Hunkie Cooper said.
It was the third straight win for a Canyon Springs (3-2, 3-0) team that opened the season with two defeats. The early-season struggles can be credited to the Pioneers graduating 33 from last year’s team and needing a few games to get younger players experience.
“I liked 0-2 because that gave us a sense of urgency,” Cooper said. “We really feel like we can control our own destiny.”
