North Las Vegas firefighters reach agreement to save jobs

North Las Vegas firefighters have reached an agreement with the city that will avoid layoffs for fiscal 2011, officials said.
“We are proud to renew our commitment to the city of North Las Vegas and come to an agreement with city officials,” Jeff Hurley, president of the North Las Vegas firefighters union, said in a news release. “However it is important to remember that this is the third time that North Las Vegas firefighters have made significant sacrifices.”
Earlier this year, North Las Vegas announced that it would likely have to lay off 16 city firefighters unless changes were made to current contracts. The city had to cut $1.9 from the fire department’s budget for next fiscal year, because of the economic downturn.
As part of the deal, the firefighters union agreed to forgo any wage increase, and new firefighters and paramedics will start at 5 percent less than existing entry-level pay.

That was very big of you guys, negotiating away the future earnings of the lowest paid members of your department. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Well sdcharger, tell me what a better alternative would have been. Should they have gone to 16 new firefighters and their families and said, "Sorry guys, maybe we can rehire you next year"? I'm thinking that sacrificing the pay scale of a recruit class that hasn't been hired yet is going to be a little higher on my list of viable options than cutting existing jobs...
