Las Vegas company files suit over Xbox, DVD burner technology

A Las Vegas company that claims to own technology used in the Xbox game system and in a DVD burner has filed a patent infringement lawsuit over those products.

Attorneys for Synchrome Technology Inc. filed suit in U.S. District Court for Nevada on Monday against Redmond, Wash.-based Xbox maker Microsoft Corp. as well as DVD burner maker NEC Corporation of America of Irving, Texas.

The lawsuit says two individuals, Faan-Hoan Liu and Jorge Gustavson, in 1998 and in 2001 obtained U.S. patents for "Method and Apparatus for Allowing Communication Between a Host Computer and At Least Two Storage Devices Over a Single Interface." The patents were later assigned to Synchrome.

Synchrome claims the Xbox and NEC's ND-3550A burner infringe on its patents.

The defendants have not yet responded to the allegations.

The law industry Web site law360.com last month described Synchrome as a patent-holding company and says it's pursuing similar patent litigation in Georgia against LG Electronics USA Inc., Samsung Electronics America Inc., Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. and Panasonic Corp. of North America.

Records show other Synchrome litigation over the years has involved Hewlett-Packard Co., Gateway Inc., Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. and other technology companies.
