LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Unfortunate motive behind ethnic studies law

Tom Horne, Arizona’s superintendent of Public Instruction, thinks the Latino ethnic studies classes in the Tucson school district could in some circumstances be divisive, could increase ethnic identity, and might be used to promote resentment toward agencies and officers of the government.

Instead of helping Tucson review its curriculum, Horne persuaded Arizona legislators to pass a bill restricting ethnic studies.

In so doing, the Arizona Legislature has confirmed the Latino community’s distrust of government, helped make Latino-Americans feel like second-class citizens and informed the people of Arizona that it’s acceptable to discriminate against people of Latino descent.

Why would Horne support a divisive and likely unconstitutional law?

It’s because he’s running for higher office, of course!

Thank goodness Nevada legislators won’t stoop to these tactics of racial politics and discrimination to win a few extra votes. Or will they?
