Men plead guilty to conspiracy to sell counterfeit slot machines

Two men charged with making and selling counterfeit slot machines and unauthorized gambling software pleaded guilty Thursday in a Las Vegas courtroom.

Cuban national Rodolfo Rodriguez Cabrera and Henry Mantilla of Cape Coral, Fla., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to produce and sell counterfeit International Game Technology slot machines and computer programs, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a press release.

The men, indicted by a federal grand jury in Las Vegas on April 22, appeared Thursday before U.S. District Court Judge Philip M. Pro.

Each man faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. They are scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 20.

Cabrera, arrested June 8, 2009, in Riga, Latvia, is the first person to be extradited from Latvia to the United States under a new extradition treaty between the two countries implemented on April 15, 2009. Cabrera was extradited to the United States on Oct. 23.

The grand jury indicted the men on one count of conspiracy, two counts of trafficking in counterfeit goods, two counts of trafficking in counterfeit labels and two counts of criminal copyright infringement.

Thomas S. Dougherty of the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Chu in Nevada are prosecuting the case.

The Central Criminal Police Department of the Latvian Ministry of Interior; Latvia’s Office of the Prosecutor General, International Cooperation Division; and Department of Justice Senior Trial Attorney Deborah Gaynus of the Criminal Division’s Office of International Affairs assisted in the investigation.
