An associate of boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. appeared briefly this morning in Las Vegas Justice Court.

During the hearing, Tom Pitaro was confirmed as the attorney for 27-year-old Ocie Harris, who is accused of shooting at a BMW sedan with two men inside after one of the men exchanged words with Mayweather on Aug. 23 at the Crystal Palace Skating Center. Neither man in the car was wounded.

Metro Police Lt. George Castro said Tuesday that Harris was arrested several weeks ago in Chicago, and extradited to Las Vegas where he was released Sunday after posting a $7,500 bail. Castro identifies Harris as a Mayweather associate.

Deputy District Attorney Sam Bateman on Wednesday said the state wanted to address the issue of bail. Senior Clark County District Court Judge Joseph Bonaventure, who was sitting for Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangelo, told prosecutors to file an opposition and told Pitaro to file a reply so that Abbatangelo could rule on the issue.

Prosecutors said the state had served Harris with a Markham notice, which means the case could go to a grand jury. A preliminary hearing was set for May 17.

Harris was arrested on attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges.
