Official: Companies getting state contracts aren’t registered in Nevada
Tuesday, March 9, 2010 | 1:35 p.m.
CARSON CITY – There are up to 20 companies that are winning lucrative contracts from state agencies that aren't registered to do business in Nevada, Secretary of State Ross Miller said today.
The state Board of Examiners, at the request of Miller, gave these companies 30 days to prove they are qualified to do business in the state or lose the contracts.
For instance, the Remi Group of Charlotte, N.C., has been given a $5 million contract to provide equipment maintenance management services for various state agencies. The company will cover state agencies’ equipment with insurance and provide maintenance services.
Paul Roen Company of Calpine, Calif., has received a $3.6 million contract for equipment rental, hauling services and road rehabilitation for a number of state agencies.
If these and other companies aren't registered in the state, Nevada is losing a lot of revenue, Miller told the board.
Miller was chairman of the examiners board meeting since Gov. Jim Gibbons was in Eureka. He participated in the session by telephone.
The secretary of state said his office checked to see if the companies were in good standing in Nevada. The examiners board was told by a representative from the state Purchasing Division that it was up to the individual agencies to check into whether the companies are in good standing. She said the Purchasing Division gives training to the agencies but it’s their responsibility to verify the company is licensed in Nevada before awarding a contract.
Miller said some of these companies might be doing business under another name.
The state Department of Education is awarding a $360,000 contract to HMB Information System Developers of Columbus, Ohio, for maintenance and support on the computer system. It was one of the contracts Miller said didn't show up on the Nevada records.
The state Department of Corrections is awarding a $1 million contract to Good Source to provide food for inmates statewide. Good Source is based in Carlsbad, Calif.

Back door bucks! business as usual here in Nevada!
Good call, Miller!
The problem is who to serve when suing or when there's another need for a legal notice. The mortgage mess is one good example of this -- one of DoucheBank's many trust entities is wreaking havoc with foreclosures yet there's nobody to serve ANYWHERE! And current Nevada law is simplistically ineffective on serving out-of-state entities.
Maybe DoucheBank is smarter than the laws the rest of us have to work with.
But how many of the companies that did win contracts got them through the Gov's office?
Disgusting! Not a good enough place for them to do the proper paper work, but boy can they take our money.
Really? There's not a single business in NV that could make PRISON FOOD?
Somebody should do a cross check on their political contibutions these comapnies have made and to who.
Good job Gibbons. Napping while the business of the State of Nevada goes on or is he in on it?
IT'S ABOUT TIME, ROSS, THAT YOU ACTUALLY DID *SOMETHING* FOR THE STATE OF NEVADA FOR THE PAYCHECK YOU GET.
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO START CRACKING DOWN ON THE THUGS THAT OPERATE BUSINESSES AS CORPORATIONS, LLC's, LP's THAT DON'T EVEN KEEP CORPORATE RESOULUTIONS, HOLD BOARD MEETINGS, AND ARE NOTHING MORE THAN 'NEVADA BASED' SHAMS..?
WHAT ABOUT THE LOSER'S THAT SELL *NEVADA* AS THE *CORPORATE NIRVANA* KNOWING FULL WELL THAT THESE *TIN CAN* INCORPORATIONS ARE NOTHING MORE THAT THINLY DISGUISED SHYSTER OPERATIONS..?
WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN, ROSS.
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO WHAT YOU ARE PAID TO DO....?
AND START REVOKING CORPORATE CHARTERS.....?
Great point wizardofOz.
Ross Miller is a do nothing aristocrat. Those contracts should be null and void. What Ross Miller has done is give these out of state companies additional time to simply fill out the forms to become licensed in Nevada.
Ross Miller has screwed Nevada companies by letting these companies file after the fact.
If they were doing business in Nevada without proper licensure, why did Ross Miller not refer this to his Daddy's Chief of Staff, Attorney General Cortez-Masto, for enforcement.
That's what you get in a country that only selects the lowest bidder!
