Hotter temperatures ahead for Las Vegas

Afternoon temperatures to climb to 109 Monday, forecasters say

Grab a cool drink and head for the pool -- temperatures will be hot today and even hotter Sunday in Las Vegas.

Although they'll be hot, today's temperatures will be near normal, climbing to 101 degrees by mid afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

But a warm-up is moving in. Afternoon highs are expected to hit 106 Sunday, 109 Monday and 105 Tuesday, the weather service said.

However, a weak low pressure system will move across Southern Nevada today, bringing isolated thunderstorms to northern and central Nye County and northern Lincoln County, forecasters said.

At 4:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 77 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 75 degrees. The record low was 56 degrees, set in 1944.

Around the valley just before 5 a.m., temperatures were 74 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 76 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 75 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 89 degrees by 9 a.m., to 97 degrees by noon and reach a high of 101 degrees by 3 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 102 degrees and the record high was 114 degrees, set in 1970.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 99 degrees by 6 p.m., to 92 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 86 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Sunday's morning low will be 77 degrees and Sunday's high will climb to 106 degrees, they said.
