Convicted felon gets 7 years in attempted carjacking

A convicted felon who authorities say pointed a gun at a woman and tried to steal her car as he was fleeing from police was sentenced to seven years in federal prison and five years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney for Nevada Daniel Bogden said Wednesday.

Robert Lee Gibson, 41, of Las Vegas, pleaded guilty in March to brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. He was sentenced Friday by Chief U.S. District Judge Roger L. Hunt.

Bogden said that on Dec. 28, 2009, Gibson test drove an SUV at a car dealership on Boulder Highway. When he returned to the dealership, the salesman exited and Gibson drove away at a high rate of speed, Bogden said.

Metro Police officers saw the vehicle speeding recklessly through neighborhoods and failing to stop for signs. The vehicle eventually came to a stop and Gibson was apprehended in an alley near the 200 block of St. Louis Avenue. Police say Gibson pointed a firearm at a woman and tried to force her to turn over the keys to her vehicle, but he ran off when the woman screamed.

Officers recovered a revolver from a trash can that was tied to Gibson. Police also recovered from him a small bag containing 16 bullets and a news article referencing a past crime for which he had been convicted.

Gibson was convicted in 2000 in Clark County of battery with use of a deadly weapon, possession of a stolen vehicle, evading police officers and grand larceny for carjacking a vehicle and leading police on a chase.
