Big stories

Las Vegas Monorail – Ground was broken at the Sahara station for the Las Vegas Monorail, which eventually opened on Paradise Road and east of the Las Vegas Strip.

MGM Mirage – A big deal we reviewed, from 2000, was MGM Grand Inc.’s acquisition of Mirage Resorts Inc.

Palms – George Maloof and investors built the Palms casino-resort on Flamingo Road west of the Strip.

Yucca Mountain – We published a series of stories on the dangers of using Yucca Mountain to store the nation’s commercial nuclear waste. At the time, the government timeline called for the first waste to arrive in 2010.

September 11th – The terror attacks had an immediate effect on Las Vegas tourism and plunged the nation into recession. Officials initially were unsure what to make of the situation. “The unprecedented nature of what happened yesterday made it impossible to predict how people will react,’’ said Rob Powers, vice president of communications for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Some 242 meetings and conventions scheduled for Las Vegas were almost immediately canceled or postponed.

Tuscany – Construction started on Tuscany Suites, planned to be a 1,022-room hotel-casino at Flamingo Road and Koval Lane.

Pulte Homes – Two of the Las Vegas Valley’s largest homebuilders – Pulte Homes and Del Webb Corp. – merged.
