Store clerk foils robber’s heist after baseball bat attack

Family Mart

A convenience store clerk in North Las Vegas ended a suspect's robbery attempt after striking him in the head with a baseball bat early this morning, police said.

North Las Vegas Police spokesman Tim Bedwell said the man entered the Family Shop convenience store, 2014 W. Ann Road, at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday with what appeared to be a handgun.

The clerk was complying with the suspect's demands for cigarettes and money when two customers entered the store and distracted the suspect — at which

point the clerk grabbed a metal bat and hit the suspect in the head at least once, Bedwell said.

The suspect was incapacitated from the blow and transported to University Medical Center in critical condition, Bedwell said.

Police said detectives are looking at surveillance video retrieved from the store and statements from the two witnesses and clerk. The suspect's handgun was determined to be a fake, Bedwell said.

"At this point, it appears this is a justifiable use of force," Bedwell said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
