2 aircraft intercepted for violating Las Vegas airspace

Friday, July 9, 2010 | 10:53 a.m.

F-16 fighter planes intercepted two single-engine aircraft this morning near Las Vegas for violating temporary flight restrictions in effect because of President Obama’s visit.

Shortly after 7 a.m., a Cessna 210 was met by the F-16s, which were on hand to enforce the restrictions, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said.

The Cessna landed at the North Las Vegas Airport, where it was met by local authorities, NORAD said.

The second violation was at 7:34 a.m. and was described by NORAD as a single-engine general aviation aircraft.

That plane landed in Mesquite, where authorities were waiting, NORAD said.

A temporary flight restriction with a 30-nautical-mile radius around Las Vegas was in effect since late Thursday afternoon. The Federal Aviation Administration said the restrictions would end by 11:30 a.m. today.
