Henderson officer fatally shoots armed man after standoff

Officer-involved shooting

Henderson Police fatally shot a man Saturday morning after a standoff with officers who responded to the home on a report of a domestic dispute.

Officers responded at about 6:50 a.m. to the home at 618 Severn St., which is near Greenway Road and East Horizon Drive, after receiving a 911 call about a man threatening his wife. When officers arrived, the woman quickly was able to exit the home but her 15-year-old son was still inside, police said.

For the next hour, officers asked the man to come outside and surrender numerous times.

At 8:05 a.m., police said the man left the home and confronted officers with a handgun. Officers repeatedly told him to drop the gun and surrender, which he didn't, authorities said. Police said the man's actions "forced an officer to fire."

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The teen wasn't injured, police said.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will release the man's name. The officer who fired the shot was placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated and his name will be released after 48 hours, which is standard policy in cases of officer-involved shootings.

On June 8, six Henderson Police officers were involved in a fatal shooting in the MacDonald Highlands community, killing an armed woman who police said threatened officers with a stolen car and brandished a handgun. An inquest into that shooting hasn't been scheduled.
