Homeowner fatally shoots man during home invasion

A home invasion ended this morning with an elderly homeowner fatally shooting a man who entered his home, Metro Police said.
The incident occurred about 12:14 a.m. today in the 700 block of Clarkway Drive, near Bonanza Road and Rancho Drive. Police said the apparent robbery appeared to be random in nature.
Roberts says the homeowner called police and said he shot a man who was trying to break into his house.
Officers found the dead man's body in the doorway. His identity was not immediately made public by the Clark County coroner.
This is the 14th homicide this year in Metro Police jurisdiction.

Hooray!! good for you old man!! If everyone was packing in their homes, just watch those home invaders and burgulars head for the hills!! Let this be a warning to all you potential scum! go back to California, and whatever other sewers you crawled up from! Gun control ? NO WAY!!!
Good for the homeowner! I wish I had been packing heat when I was robbed in my own home!
Just think if Nancy and her Congress have their way we won't have the RIGHT to protect ourselves. The criminals will still get the ILLEGAL guns they need and we will be sitting with our proverbial pants down. Good for you Mister you stand up and fight!!
Great news. This is exactly what should happen to anyone that breaks into ones home.
@americangirl10 Get a life. Democrats don't want your guns. That's just nonsense Rush is putting into your head.
This wasn't a homicide, this was self-defense. Metro had better tread lightly on this one.
good.
sadly, liberals still want people to not have guns.
I tip my hat to you Sir! Well done!
"Gun Control is the ability to put 6 in the X-ring."
Aim For Center Mass
I am a very liberal, progressive Democrat. I am a NRA member; I have a CCW, carry everywhere I go, and keep a gun close to me at all times. I am also strongly against ALL gun laws, which only affect law-abiding gun owners. Criminals do not obey gun laws.
I salute the homeowner for his action. Anyone uninvited who invades my home can expect the same treatment.
I am also a liberal democrat and I do NOT support gun control.
Nice job sir, no one goes to jail, no one has to go to court, no one has to be in jail..
PS dont forget to reload the pistol for the next 1.
Talk to that basketball player in Washington D.C. He got busted on a felony for having a gun in D.C.
If you're talking about the incident that I think you are .....go read that story again. He violated NBA rules by bringing a gun into a stadium.
That should read, "justifiable homicide". This is about the only way home invasions will be reduced.
If Obama and Biden had there way this old man would be dead and the perp would be looking for his next victim... Stop Gun Control!!
How big of a problem are home invasions in the Las Vegas valley?
"Homicide" doesn't necessarily mean a crime was committed -- it simply means someone died due to the actions of another person.
And if the R-J's account of this break-in is to be believed, it's textbook self-defense. The knucklehead allegedly told the homeowner he was going to beat him and kill him... AFTER the homeowner had pointed a .45 at him and told him to leave.
saltydawg,
I kind of think home invasions are random and not that common. It's the thugs that are dumb that do it. I think more expereinced criminals know that home invasions are not really worth it because the police can add on all sorts of other charges including kidknapping. Kidknapping charges can be as much as a life in prison. In my case a home invasion happened to me, but I was careless and trusted everyone that knocked at my door. Just be aware of your surroundings, and ask who is at the door before you open it.
use common sense people; self defense is legal but be careful you identify your victim before pulling the trigger; it may be a family member.
Thanks iamdjrebel for your comment. Good advice.
GOOD FOR THE HOMEOWNER! HOME INVADERS GET TO HEAR TWO THINGS FROM ME. ONE: "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOME" IF THAT DOESN'T WORK... TWO: "BANG!"
I am also a liberal democrat and I do NOT support gun control.
i have 2 shotguns in my house. both have a blank in the chamber to scare the hell out of the neighbor kid that might be climbing over the fence.
next round...blows their head off.
No pricey health care for this fellow! A cheap burial.
I just got back from working in Israel for the Christian embassy. I was amazed at the number of guns toted by people. Yes those in the military have to keep one with them 24/7, but even bag boys and anyone who wants to can carry. It's strange getting on a bus and seeing a boy and a girl holding hands, one with a M-16 and the other with a side-arm.
Yes, they are prepared for war. But also, the crime rate in Israel is next to zip.
"dipstick" use common sense people; self defense is legal but be careful you identify your victim before pulling the trigger; it may be a family member.
Duh, I think it is safe to say that family members don't kick in their front doors at night.
When did Obama and Biden try to regulate guns? Did I miss that? As far as I know Obama signed two laws allowing guns in national parks, in Wash. DC, and on Amtrak.
The Second Amendment kept this homeowner alive and that is a wonderful thing.
Gilbert Arenas did not get busted just for having a gun in D.C. He is facing felony charges for possessing unregistered firearms without a license. So, not only did he have unregistered guns (illegal) in his possession, he didn't have a license to carry a gun (illegal).
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/16/sports...
As far as I'm concerned, the burglar committed suicide. Another scumbag off the streets. Don't know what color he is, his national origin, religion, party affiliation, background, etc. Don't know and don't care. Just another POS where he belongs---in the ground.
stevem -- I keep the chamber empty in my Mossberg. I figure anyone who doesn't recognize the sound of the first round getting jacked in place is ready for buckshot.
"The Second Amendment kept this homeowner alive and that is a wonderful thing."
powerplay -- no, the "wonderful thing" he's first protected by is the state Constitution's Article I, Sec. 11: "Right to keep and bear arms... 1. Every citizen has the right to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes."
I am a social liberal, and I don't have a problem with anything that happened in this story. Neither do any of my Obama voting friends.
It sounds like justice was served.
Democrats as a group don't support gun control. There is a group that thinks we need to protect the children at all costs, even at the cost of freedom. Some of those people are democrats, but they are not the majority.
"There is a group that thinks we need to protect the children at all costs"
I agree with them! That's why I own a firearm and you should too!
Liberals are too dumb to be trusted with a firearm.
When Obama was a state senator in Chicago, he supported gun control. The mantra was 'No handguns in the city'. If Obama had his way, this guy wouldnt be able to protect himself.
All you buffet liberals can pick and choose, but you are out of step with your leader.
the party of hate is out and about I can see.
I'm an independent, I think everyone should be able to possess a gun for protection. Most random criminals possess illegal firearms, and most of the wackjob mass-murderers sport legal firearms. I should be able to carry my gun to protect myself from both.
laguna wrote: "Liberals are too dumb to be trusted with a firearm."
The airwaves are rampant with rightwing talk shows. There are virtually no liberal talk shows. There is a reason for this: Liberals are smart enough to not need anyone to tell them how to think.
Your friendly neighborhood left wing, liberal gun toting NRA member who believes our Second Amendment rights should not be infringed whatsoever.
Liberal talk shows don't work because they suck! Trust me, If there's money to be made, You would be hearing them. keeping the chamber ready in the Mossberg.
*applauds the homeowner*
One less piece of trash on our streets.
Capital punishment by the public...I love it. No trial, no lawyers, no three hots and a cot for years before the dumb ass was actually sentenced (and then released due to time served). About time the public stood up for themselves and said, "Hey, if the cops can't do it, we know who can!".
I hope this puts the rest of the scum on notice.
I would like to know more about what happened with this confrontation because the occupant of the house would normally have been asleep at this time but was in the living room area with a gun handy when the door was broken down. What seems odd is that a man with a cane could have made it to the living room before the door was broken down. Why did the intruder select this house? What was he looking for? Did the two know each other? Was there prior contact? Could the situation have been avoided so no one need have died?
I would modify ionfield's statement slightly by noting that the airwaves are rampant with stupid talk and talk show hosts. They inflame without informing people factually. This is how dumb things like electing regressives in MA. happen.
ms chaffer appears to be upset about the Massachusetts election results... Too bad, So sad...
The news reports regarding the story are interesting. The homeowner has had to contact some media outlets to correct some misinformation that they were putting out. Look around and you'll figure it out pretty quick.
I cannot stand anyone who preys on the young, infirm or elderly.
I'd like to know if this guy was working alone or had any prior knowledge of the house and the living patterns of the owner. Did he do some work there as a daylaborer? Was he working alone?
mschaffer; shoot first; ask questions later.
Let this be a LESSON to all you gangbangers. You attempt a home invasion in our home, be prepared to see your head roll down the street, without your torso....It's gonna roll all the way back to California..
If these stupid people read the paper, they would know that in Las Vegas, the citizens are armed and ready to protect their homes.
We should give the shooter the key to the city. Anyone who is able to reduce the crime on our streets via protecting themselves deserves a meddle. Lets hope he is not sued, dragged through court hearings, publicly humiliated by the ACLU etc..
WAY TO GO!! I love storys with happy endings like this. Dumbass criminal got exactly what was coming to him. I only hope that every home invasion ends this well in the future.

Good for him !
To all of you racist Crackers out there, the perp was a White guy. 90% of Vegas crimes are commited by the White race.
Hey freddie_ray.. Thanks for capitalizing 'Crackers' and 'White'. It makes all of us white crackers feel special. lol
Freddie-- Then why is it that the jails are full of negroes... Get what you got...
can we get all the facts first?then shoot r traps
Judging by what I see in these posts, it looks like Las Vegas needs to be segregated again. Everyone here seems to hate each other along lines of race, however no one knows what each other's race here is LOL!!
"When Obama was a state senator in Chicago, he supported gun control. The mantra was 'No handguns in the city'."
Why don't you finish the whole story, smart ass!! There is more to it and you know it.
I see we have the makings of a new TV show -
CSI - Ms Schaffer
She has it ALL figured out.
msschaffer is a moron.
Congratulations to this old man!! One less entitled leach in the system. I am thrilled that my taxes will not be going up to provide scum like this with free health care. Or anyone else who thinks they "deserve" something they have no earned!
I am a progressive/liberal, and I own and carry guns. Nor do I want to take anyone's guns away.
I am glad the homeowner wasn't hurt and did what he felt he had to do. We should still try to give people better educations and more opportunities so maybe they won't turn to crime.
As a so-called liberal, I take gun control very seriously. I hit what I aim at.
I am relieved to know the homeowner was unhurt and I pray that he will not have nightmares/PTSD for the rest of his life because of what happened.
Sounds like msschaffer assumes all elderly folks go to bed early and that it's some sort of a crime to have a gun handy. Yeah, you can ask all the questions you want but the fact is a man tried to break into a home and that resident had every right to protect himself. Period.
Unless it was a setup to justify murder DesertKayaker. We are all outside looking in and only have the information given by the news to go on...and we all know the news is always accurate.
Det_Munch must be the boyfriend who was on top of LarryVegas.
I see no one could be bothered to read the research on how often tragedy accompanies having firearms in the home. Oh well.
AWESOME!!! Another pest stomped! Considering what a widespread, all-too-commonplace plague these scum have become, people who kill them are war heroes as far as I'm concerned.
Guess we are gonna have to start training burglars how to avoid being shot while robbing a home.lol
Good for the homeowner. Someone points a .45 at you, you need to hightail it out of there.
Liberals have to admit that gun control is generally part of your platform. It's not right now because it's such a loser issue for them.
I am heartened to hear that a bunch godless-glassy eyed-clintonistas have finally come over to the right side of an issue. lol
90% of crimes are committed by the white race.
hahaha!
ya, ok.
maybe if having a job and a good credit score is a crime.
Do you suppose it was just the beginning of a session of rough sex?
Remember: guns dont kill people, bullets do.
Nice shootin' Pops.
Now that what I call a cheap shot...no hospital..no long trial..no jail..no parole..just a bag to a pine box. This guy just saved us all a ton of cash and no future victims..Thank you
To bad that Fort Hood shooter guy didn't die, we would all be better off. They should just let him die, not give him medical care. Congrats to this guy, I'd be proud to be his neighbor.
Great job old man! My home has already been robbed once when no one was home. Next time my house is robbed I will be ready with a bullet in the chamber.
Let's try to think like a criminal for a second.
What is the object of a "home invasion?" To rob the house/person, we could safely assume.
But think about what most homes contain these days that is "worth stealing." What, a DVD player? How much are you going to get for a stolen, used DVD player? Maybe $20, when you can buy one new at Walmart for $40? How about a plasma TV? Maybe you could steal that, if you could carry it without dropping it. But who's going to buy a used, hot plasma TV when you can buy a new one so cheaply?
Maybe you are going to steal cash? Well, unless you specifically know there is a big pile of cash in that person's home, how can you assume the person living there even has $50 to his name, especially nowadays?
Bottom line: "Home invasion" is a stupid crime, because there's almost no payoff for it. Maybe if you're desperate to find $20 for a hit of meth, but it's a crime for idiots.
Oh well, one less living idiot in Las Vegas now. Say, is American Idol on tonight?
From msshaffer - "I see no one could be bothered to read the research on how often tragedy accompanies having firearms in the home. Oh well."
you can switch the word firearms in that sentence with just about anything and come up with something to outlaw. Geeze, next it will be pools, then eventually ice cream.
If you don't want firearms in your home, don't have 'em, but you'll wish you did when someone invades your home and the police can't get there for 45 mins.
We are all responsible for ourselves. Don't be looking for someone else to protect you. You'll always be dissapointed.
Don't worry bout mshaffer, he's to busy with Globull warming crap err, climate change, I mean weather challenge.
Oh look at the know nothings extolling the virtues of easy violence and dismissing science.
geezelouise,
It turns out that when firearms are not in the home the levels of suicides, murders, etc. drop, so there is very little substitution effect going on. The basic facts are that family members are more likely to commit violence against each other rather than protect each other when there is a gun in the house. So, I'll stay safe and sane and you can remain paranoid with your locks on your doors and windows and your gun at hand while sane people pass by your house. Meahwhile, you become ever more lonely and out of touch with humanity.
ms schaffer does not believe in the second amendment. The ms thinks that if your home is invaded, you should be submissive with you valuables and family members...
It is sad when anyone dies, but I can't think of a more deserving type than someone breaking into a home.
What about the mass shootings and cop killings perpetrated by CCW holders?
http://www.vpc.org/ccwkillers.htm
LarryVegas,
How is your boyfriend doing with the on top position?
"mschaffer - The basic facts are that family members are more likely to commit violence against each other rather than protect each other when there is a gun in the house."
Where did you dig that BS up?
Such phoney challenges to armed self defense were discredited long ago by the 1991 seminal work of Professor Gary Kleck of Florida State University-Point Blank:Guns and violence in America. Kleck's exhaustive study demonstrated defensive uses of firearms by citizens occurred 2.5 MILLION times per year, a figure far overshadowing criminal uses of guns. Guns are used far more often to defend against crime then to perpertrate crime! If you prefer to be a victim/sheep versus a survivor then continue down your path with your blinders on...
If in 1991 when we had say 250 million people; 2.5 million (10%) of them had to use a firearm for defense we have a BIGGER problem than any of this. It would also indicate that not very many people killed someone in the 2.5 million defensive uses or I would suspect that would have made some headlines somewhere even if only 25% which would be 625,000 dead had happened.
castle wrote: "If in 1991 when we had say 250 million people; 2.5 million (10%) of them had to use a firearm for defense we have a BIGGER problem than any of this. Uhh, castle, 2.5 million is 1% of 250 million not 10%. In the great majority of those 2.5 million defensive gun uses, the simple display of a gun prevented any further action being required. In addition, you rarely see news stories of the sort where violence, such as bodily harm or a robbery, was prevented. And, many of those would not have been reported to the police.
My mistake, your math is correct. My idea was that if we have that much crime that 2.5 million of our citizen need to use a firearm for defense we have a much bigger problem to deal with.
The Kleck study itself was discredited but MG wouldn't understand this.
http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/1996/07/...
Basically, gun owners lie like other humans do and have no special relationship with truth.
I'd really like to know, mschaffer, what would you do to defend yourself if your home were being invaded?
Given that it is a very low probability I don't waste time worrying about it just as I am not spooked by regressive conservative nonsense about terrorism. I spend more time thinking about higher probability threats such as the drivers on the road where we face far greater danger than from the hyped stories about home invasions. However, feel free to continue being afraid and paranoid geezelouise.
If you want to waste time worrying about home invasions why not contact Metro and see what they suggest you do?
ms schaffer just won't let it drop. ms schaffer is not a believer is self defense. Her answer is to call 911 or her neighbor and let someone else take care of the problem.
Come to think about it, this is the stance that ms schaffer takes on all issues.
Study an issue until you can convince yourself that you are correct...
Hi LarryVegas,
Your boyfriend must be getting quite the workout being on top.
How did those four well armed and trained police do against a lone shooter in Washington State? And they had protection on. Your fantasies of self defense are more likely to remain such and wise people will find you boorish at best.
Mschaffer wrote: "Given that it is a very low probability I don't waste time worrying about it just as I am not spooked by regressive conservative nonsense about terrorism. Yes, a home invasion at any particular home is a low probability; however, home invasions are real and they occur in the Las Vegas Valley quite regularly, and no home is immune. Contacting Metro for their suggestion on what to do will get you a likely response of call 911.
Calling 911, if you are even able to do so, will have a Metro officer there in anywhere from a few minutes, but more likely 30 to 45 minutes or more, depending on where you are located and how close Metro officers happen to be at the time. And when they do arrive, they will not immediately come rushing into your home to rescue you. They will have to asses the situation, attempt to determine who the good guys are and who the bad guys are, and possibly wait for backup. Only then will they enter your home.
But guess what? It only takes seconds for a home invader to beat or kill you. Metro will then be there to report and clean up. Is this really how you want to defend yourself and your family?
I encourage everyone to arm themselves and get proper firearms training and have a gun handy (out of the reach of small children, of course) and be prepared for that low probability home invasion. It is much better to be prepared than to be sorry. If every home invader ends up being killed by the homeowner, I can assure you that word will get out and home invasions, for the most part, will be a thing of the past.
ionfield,
When you encourage everyone to arm themselves does that include the mentally challenged? How about former felons? Should guys with a history of spousal violence have guns? How many fights in families end in violence against family and those guns you want everyone to have will help this how? How many groggy people will end up shooting a family member who was sneaking back into the house late at night? What about suicides? How will everyone having a gun affect this?
Pesky consequences.
"Mschaffer - If you want to waste time worrying about home invasions why not contact Metro and see what they suggest you do?"
I did, they suggested I buy a gun and be prepared to hold my ground until they have time to respond...
Stop Gun Control!!!
mschaffer,
My encouraging everyone to arm themselves was intended to be interpreted as meaning everyone legally allowed to own a gun. Purchasing and registering a handgun requires a FBI background check. The mentally ill and felons may not legally purchase or possess a handgun. Guys (and women) with a history of spousal violence should be in jail or in the category of felon.
Your sense of family fights and family members getting shot, and suicides is greatly overblown most likely by anti-gun organizations such as the Brady Campaign that have a proven track record of spreading falsehoods and lies about guns.
"Mschaffer - The Kleck study itself was discredited but MG wouldn't understand this."
Wrong again! The only one failing to understand is you. As part of Bill Clintons serial assaults on the Second Amendment, Attorney General Janet Reno's Justice Department set out to debunk the Kleck research and commissioned a 1994 survey by the anti-gun Police Foundation. The new study mirrored Klecks findings and concluded, "...guns are used FAR more often to defend against crime than to perpetrate crime." The study was so devasting to the gun ban cause it didn't see the light of day until 1997. Even then it was ignored by the mainstream media...
Ms schaffer thinks the same about home defense as she does national defense.
"Give them what they want and they will go away."
"Please."
MG,
This Metro video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOwE5CjjV...
makes no mention of buying a gun. Who did you contact at Metro so I can call and confirm they actually told you something this stupid?
Also this link on the Metro site makes no mention of buying a gun:
http://www.lvmpd.com/pdf/prevention/home...
So far you are lying about what Metro told you and cannot provide a credible source for your claims regarding DOJ during President Clinton's administration.
LarryVegas,
How is your boyfriend doing?
Actually, I prefer smart action to the consistently stupid ideas you present but, hey, that's just me.
I've got a Mossberg 20-gauge pump shotgun, junior model, which means a short barrel and a short stock (easy to move in a house).
Anybody with half a brain will hit the road running when they hear the sound of a round being pumped into a shotgun chamber.
The best defense is strong locks on all windows and doors. Most front doors can be kicked in, visit Lowes or HD for locks that can't be kicked in.
mschaffer wrote: "This Metro video:

The video and Metro links tell you how to help prevent a home invasion, but they do not tell you what to do when a home invader unexpectedly comes crashing through your door. When this happens, your only chance of surviving the invasion unscathed is to be prepared with a gun that you can quickly retrieve and immediately put to use.
If you think you can just do as the invader tells you, and submissively comply, and survive the invasion, you are playing a fool's game. Your best bet is to immediately put down the invader with a gun that you have been trained with and you know how to use. Do you really want to take the chance that the invader(s) will leave you and your family unharmed as witnesses?
mschaffer - So far you are lying about what Metro told you
Wrong again! Your two web sites do not speak for the entire LVMPD. I have worked and trained directly with members of the LVMPD and have had first hand discussions with real officers versus your virtual world. There is only so much they can say on a web site in order to avoid the calls from loony tunes such as yourself. Additionaly I do need to waste my time educating ostrichs such as yourself that prefer to keep their heads stuck in the ground. You sound like an angry little kid having a tantrum because they can't have their way...
So MG is unwilling to back up its statements and claims it is because the police can't handle calls from the public. Alrighty then! Mg has no credibility.
So,ionfield, how often does your scenario occur? And when they "unexpectedly" crash through your door they will have both the advantage of surprise and their weapons already in hand. My earlier referral to the killing of four police officers with better training than the vast majority of the public with firearms should provide a clue to you but, alas, you are John Wayne reincarnated. Oh wait, he was an ACTOR. Well go back to sitting by the front door with your gun drawn at all times.
Ms schaffer still doesn't get it by stating that homeowners do not have time to retrieve a weapon to defend themselves from an intruder.
Ms schaffer must think we all live in a one room house and sit by the front door watching television.
If and when my alarm sounds, my dog barks or I hear a door being kicked in, I am not waiting around to ask the intruder what he wants. I will go directly and retrieve my pistol then I will go greet the intruder.
Ms schaffer is an elitist who thinks she knows exactly what is best of all of us. Typical liberal thinking...

The most recent stats I could come up with without spending a lot of time researching your question is that in 2004 the Review-Journal did a study that showed there were 749 home invasions in the Las Vegas Valley over the previous three years. The invaders typically left with less than $100 and they injured or killed the victims in about half the invasions.
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa...
The invaders will perhaps have an advantage of surprise, but not entirely at my home. I have a KatyBar installed on my front door that will not allow the door to be kicked in without the assistance of a battering ram and a very determined invasion crew. This will immediately alert me as to what is being attempted and along with always having a firearm with me, I will have an advantage of surprise on the invaders if they do manage to get into my home.
Without strong protection on a door, the invader(s) will have more of a surprise advantage, but at the same time, a homeowner with a gun ready will also have an advantage of surprise on the invader(s). Home invaders are not expecting to encounter an armed homeowner; otherwise, they would not attempt to invade that home and move on to someone else's home, perhaps yours.
And, yes, a homeowner is at a disadvantage when the invader(s) bust in with guns drawn. Yet, I would rather take my chances with having a gun and a fighting chance of survival. Without a gun, you are totally left to the mercy of the invader(s). Good luck with that.
Is msscaffer off her meds or what??Do us all a favor and read THE WHOLE CONSTITUTION not just the part u beleive in...if you don like it move out of our country fast!!!P.S Please take Nancy Pelosi and her cronies with you along with all of the illegal aliens that refuse to become tax payn citizens...Thanks

ionfield,
The exact quote you mangled from the article you sourced was:
"Victims suffered injuries in about half the invasions, with about 1 percent of the cases resulting in a death, including a few cases in which homeowners killed the assailant.".
It would be nice to know how many weapons were taken and then used in subsequent crimes for starters. Regardless, the fact remains that home invasions remain a small part of the overall number of burglaries committed and there is a reason that criminals refer to weapons as portable wealth. Advertising the presence of weapons in the home is actually telling people you have something valuable that they would love to have.
