Clark County schools report decline in dropout rate

For a second consecutive year, the Clark County School District is reporting an improvement in its dropout rate – to 4.6 percent in 2009, from 5.8 percent in 2008.

The improvement is the equivalent of about 1,127 students, equal to the enrollment of the district’s average-sized middle school.

In a statement today, Clark County Schools Superintendent Walt Rulffes attributed the improvement to “the work and dedication shown by our teachers and school administrators …Our goal remains to provide every student in the district with a quality education and the resources they need to successfully contribute to our community.”

In recent years the district has stepped up outreach efforts to lure recent dropouts back to class and expanded Adult Ed programs. District officials say intensive intervention programs and the new career and technical academies have also helped keep kids in school.

Dropout rates are based on the number of students who do not return to school after the summer, or who withdraw and do not re-enroll at another campus.
