NV Energy will purchase power from a solar photovoltaic array planned near Primm, the developer, NexLight, announced today.
The utility has signed a purchase agreement for 50 megawats of electricity to be generated at NexLight's Silver State Solar project 12 miles east of Primm. The utility has agreed to purchase only a small amount of electricity from the plant, which plans to generate about 300 megawatts of electricity total. The developer is seeking power purchase agreements with out-of-state utilities for the balance of available electricity.
Environmentalists object to the developer's plans to grade over tortoise habitat for part of the 7,840-acre project.
The planned solar array has received fast tracking from the Bureau of land Management and is undergoing a environmental review.
Construction on the project is expected by December and power could be flowing as early as May, 2011.
