Transportation roundup: Computer outage prevents DMV from renewing licenses today

Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 | 2:05 a.m.

The Department of Motor Vehicles will not be able to issue or renew driver's licenses or identification cards today because of a scheduled outage of the Social Security Administration's validation system.

DMV offices that are usually open on Saturday, which include the ones in Henderson, North Las Vegas and the Flamingo Road and Sahara Avenue offices in Las Vegas, will remain open.

The DMV electronically validates Social Security numbers of motorists applying or renewing driver's licenses or identification cards at the counter. Those who are eligible will still be able to renew on the department's Web site.

People who have driving tests scheduled for today should still keep their appointments, the department said.

All DMV offices will be closed Monday in observance of President's Day.

Work to close ramp from I-515 to I-15

Ramp closure

The ramp from Interstate 515 to northbound I-15 will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly beginning Monday and continuing to Friday for bridge work.

Lanes of I-15 between the Spaghetti Bowl and Cheyenne Avenue will be closed each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Feb. 21 to Feb. 28.

While the significant work on the road has been done since late December, officials said there would be occasional lane closures through the summer as work wraps up on the $240 million Interstate 15 North Design-Build Project.

The project to widen the interstate from the Spaghetti Bowl to Craig Road began in September 2007.

U.S. 93 construction causes delays

U.S. 93 construction

Work on U.S. 93 in Arizona near the Hoover Dam will cause travel delays for motorists this week after last week's scheduled blasting was delayed because of the weather.

Crews are now set to blast rock near the road on Tuesday at milepost 2.7. Motorists can expect hour-long delays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Through March 31, motorists on southbound U.S. 93 may experience 15-minute delays between mileposts 17 and 10 while crews repave the road.

The U.S. 93 project will widen about 15 miles of the road near the dam before the opening of the Hoover Dam bypass later this year.

Horse Drive to close near U.S. 95

Horse Drive closure

Horse Drive will be closed in Las Vegas where it intersects with Rachel Street and Fort Apache Road for six months.

The closure is part of work on the new $44 million Horse Drive Interchange at U.S. 95.

The intersection, which is just east of U.S. 95, will be closed beginning Tuesday and is expected to reopen in August. During the closure, traffic will be detoured to the new Skypointe Frontage Road built as part of the project.

The project, which includes construction of an overpass and full interchange, frontage roads, ramps, retaining walls and a bridge, began in June 2009 and should be done later this year.

Lanes to close on Alta Drive

Flood control project

Alta Drive will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction between Valley View Boulevard and Lacy Lane beginning Monday.

Crews will be working on the $11 million Oakey Meadows Storm Drainage System flood control project in the area.

The road closure is expected to last until June. Crews will mostly be working from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., but the lane closures will remain in effect around the clock.

The project, which is being funded by the Clark County Regional Flood Control District and the city, began in January and is scheduled to end in December.

Later in the project, work will also disrupt traffic on sections of Valley View Boulevard, Fulton Place and Hinson Street.

Road surface, sidewalks on Alexander Road to get upgrade

Alexander Road project

A road maintenance and sidewalk improvement project will cause lane closures on Alexander Road beginning Wednesday.

The project, which is being funded with federal stimulus money, includes replacing asphalt on the road and replacing curbs, sidewalks and gutters between Cimarron Road and U.S. 95.

Lane restrictions are only expected during the day, but some sidewalks may be closed 24 hours a day.

The project is expected to be completed this summer. A similar project on Lamb Boulevard is expected to begin in the next three months.

  1. "The Department of Motor Vehicles will not be able to issue or renew driver's licenses... because of a scheduled outage of the Social Security Administration's validation system".

State of Nevada agencies contract with vendors to provide computer programs to state agencies. In this case DMV's contracted software relies upon the SSA software. When the contract the first parties have entered into (NV and vendor) results in criminal neglect to third parties, the third parties have legal remedies.

For example, when Clark County courts' vendor's server goes down, false arrest warrants are issued. When a third party is harmed (falsely arrested), the third parties have remedies. For example, today drivers may be driving with expired licenses and may be cited.

These are called Crimes Against Public Justice (NRS 199) and are remedied by fines and imprisonment of the parties to the contract. However, Sheriff Gillespie refused to state in his town hall meeting Tuesday why he doesn't have a Unit to investigate NRS 199.

Unequal protection of the law rules in Las Vegas.

  2. The government run DMV needs to be shut down. Forget about that smart id or national id or whatever it is. How incompetent do you have to be to shut down the DMV on a day when most people are off work?

  3. Pathetic whiners. Blah Blah Blah. How boring is the life of the first commentator??
