Las Vegas nursing home fined for violations

A Las Vegas home for the elderly and disabled has been fined by the state and ordered to stop accepting new residents because of poor conditions at the facility.

The state Bureau of Health Care Qualify and Compliance said it found 28 violations of regulations in a Jan. 27 inspection at the Las Vegas Home Sweet Home, 2615 Lindell Road.

The inspection revealed improper supervision, medication management, criminal background checks, fire drills, smoke detector testing, sanitation, caregiver training, resident health care, physical hazards and lighting. It said unsanitary conditions were previously found in the kitchen. And there was "an immediate jeopardy situation involving missing resident medications."

The state levied a $4,800 fine and told the home not to admit any more residents. At the time of the inspection it had only six residents and five employees.

The home can appeal the sanctions. A representative of the home could not be reached for comment.

Marla McDade Williams, chief of the bureau, said in a Feb. 9 letter to the home, "Immediately upon receipts of this notice, Las Vegas Home Sweet Home must ban all admissions to safeguard the health, safety and well-being of recipients."

The bureau said the home failed two previous inspections in February 2009 and June 2009. The home had been fined $900 before.
