Boulder City Mayor Roger Tobler has announced he will run for re-election in June.

Tobler, who was elected to the City Council in 2003 and became mayor in 2007, said in a prepared statement: “It has been a real honor to serve as mayor in Boulder City. Some may question my sanity, but I have decided to run for re-election.”

“I believe our city is moving in the right direction,” he said. “We certainly have had our challenges, but we have also kept our city moving forward.”

Times are tough in Boulder City: Decreased revenue is straining the city’s budget, forcing cuts and reductions in services, while officials figure out how to pay more than $95 million in debt.

Increased traffic since the opening of the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge has affected the residents’ quality of life, Tobler said. And some vocal individuals have been critical of Tobler, the council and City Manager Vicki Mayes in recent months at City Council meetings for their handling of the city’s finances.

Tobler said he is dedicated to continuing to “protect the values of our community.” He reiterated his support for securing leases in the Eldorado Valley for renewable energy projects as a new source of revenue and said he would work to resolve the city’s debt, alluding to an eight-year plan that Mayes laid out earlier this month.

“This is a wonderful community. We all cherish our small-town atmosphere,” he said. “I understand that to be on the City Council is a position of service. As mayor, I cannot please everyone, but I do promise to serve with honesty and integrity.”

Tobler, 45, has lived in Boulder City since 1969 and owns Home Hardware and Variety on Canyon Road.
