Let’s have a Ball: Bagel and Matzo events bring out the Jewish community at Christmas time

Matzo Ball

Paging David Lee Roth: This ice sculpture was the highlight of Matzo Ball.

Sure, American Jews like Chinese food and movies, but the real reason we visit Golden Wok and AMC every Christmas Eve is that nothing else is open. This season, though, Vegas’ eligible Levites had other options.

The night before Christmas Eve, the Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada held its annual Bagel Ball at Blush. The place was packed with nearly 300 single Semites, ranging in age from 21 to 86. How religious was this group? I didn’t see any kippahs, but I did see a leopard print pimp hat. That answer your question?

“We held the event tonight,” JCC Executive Director Neil Popish told me, “instead of tomorrow, Christmas Eve, because tomorrow is Shabbat. I don’t think a lot of people will show up to the Matzo Ball for that reason. Honestly, there’s no competition.”

Popish was half right. Only 70 people showed up to JDate’s December 24 Matzo Ball, held at Blue Martini. But what the event lacked in numbers it made up for with a giant, badass ice Menorah.

A chosen UNLV law student, Jeff, recognized me and my date from the previous night’s Bagel Ball. “I’m here on the Sabbath, breaking the holiest of holy days, looking for love,” he told us.

By the end of the night, he was still looking. Oh well, Jeff, Tu Bishvat parties are right around the corner.
