Letter to the Editor:

Can Rebels truly inspire a sense of community?

Regarding the story by Mike Trask in Friday’s Las Vegas Sun, “Rallying around the UNLV Rebels”:

Are you kidding me? Comparing the Rebels and Las Vegas to the NFL’s Saints and New Orleans is, to say the least, asinine.

The people of New Orleans are a true community, most of whom I’m sure grew up being Saints fans. After all, they went through Hurricane Katrina and all the years of being the “Aints” — it truly was a bonding experience for New Orleans.

I made the decision to move here from Wisconsin in 1998. I’ve been unemployed for some time. I’ve never, ever felt compelled to follow the Rebels or any other sports team in this town to make me feel better about Las Vegas or my life.

There is no community here.

I’m thankful while I’m still here I can still listen to the Milwaukee Brewers on the Internet, have the Big Ten Network or ESPN to follow the Wisconsin Badgers — and while the Green Bay Packers are doing well, they will be on national TV.

Even if the Rebels make it to the NCAA Finals or the football team wins more than two games, I won’t be rooting for them anytime soon. I’ll be happy cheering for the Wisconsin Badgers in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day and miss the community of my Wisconsin friends.
