I hope people who want to raise taxes take notice of the fact that the latest census showed that the low-tax states gained population and political power and the high-tax states lost.
Oregon raised its taxes on the “rich” (more than $250,000 per year income) last year to fix its state finances. According to an editorial in this past week’s Wall Street Journal, the state found that the tax income increase was far less than it expected, and in one year about 25 percent of the “rich” taxpayers disappeared from the “rich” tax rolls. Maryland found the same thing in 2008, as 33 percent of the “rich” taxpayers disappeared.
Financially knowledgeable people aren’t dumb. Taxes are an important issue for businesses and people staying in or moving to and from various states.
