CARSON CITY – For the first time in the memory of many, part of the main street in Carson City will be closed for the inauguration of Brian Sandoval as governor.
Weather permitting, Sandoval will be sworn in on the front steps of the capitol in ceremonies starting at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 3.
The street is being closed for security reasons, said Dale Erquiaga, senior advisor to the governor.
Immediately after taking the oath, Sandoval will go to the governor’s office to sign executive orders and appointment letters. Erquiaga would not disclose what the executive orders deal with.
Following the swearing in, there will be a public reception in the state library behind the capitol.
The governor and his family will open their day with a special Mass at St. Teresa of Avila’s Catholic Church in Carson City. Pastor Chuck Durante will officiate as will the Most Rev. Joseph Pepe, bishop of Las Vegas, and Bishop Emeritus Phillip F. Straling, who formerly headed the diocese of Reno.
Erquiaga said the Bishop Randoph Calvo of Reno will not be attending but will be officiating at a Mass for his brother who was elected governor of Guam.
Sandoval’s children will lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the inauguration and the governor’s high school of Bishop Manogue in Reno will be playing at the swearing-in.
Sandoval and his family will take part in an “arts walk” on the afternoon of Jan. 2 visiting the various galleries and museums.
The $100 plate for general admission to the inaugural balls will be held Jan. 28 in Las Vegas at Wynn Las Vegas and Jan. 29 in Reno at the Silver Legacy. For the VIP reception, the price is $1,000 a person.
Any extra money collected will be going non-profit organizations in Las Vegas, Reno and Virginia City. They are Quest Counseling in Reno, Community Chest in Virginia City and Bridge Counseling Associates in Las Vegas. They were chosen by Sandoval’s wife because of their emphasis on mental health programs
The chairwoman of the inaugural events is former first lady Dema Guinn.
