Rory Reid bids farewell to County Commission

Rory Reid's Last Day

Clark County Commissioner Rory Reid, who chaired his last county commission meeting on Tuesday after losing the gubernatorial race in November, listens as commissioners Susan Brager and Steve Sisolak thank him for eight years of public service.

When the Clark County Commission reconvenes after New Year’s, the board will be missing a familiar face: Rory Reid chaired his last meeting on Tuesday.

Reid, who lost to Brian Sandoval by almost 12 points in Nevada’s gubernatorial race this year, will step down after serving for eight years as the board’s chairman. His fellow commissioners credited him for his dedication and support for the county’s hospitals and neglected children.

“We believe you left Clark County in a better place...You’re dedicated, and the hard work shows,” said fellow Commissioner Susan Brager. “You’ve shown me compassion and care can make a difference.”

The city of Henderson, Sheriff Doug Gillespie and the Nevada Cancer Association gave Reid tokens of appreciation in parting.

Commissioner Tom Collins, visibly emotional, called Reid “my close friend” and said, “We’re going to miss you here.”

Reid, who said he has no definite plans to seek public office after he leaves, maintained his sardonic wit through the well wishes, thanking his colleagues for the “eulogies.”

Eventually, though, he turned more serious.

“This is a high stress environment. I think this is the most collegial board I’ve ever been on,” said Reid, who will keep his day job at the Lionel, Sawyer and Collins law firm. “More than my colleagues, you’re my friends...I’m proud of what we’ve done, and I’ll never forget it.”
