Rainy weekend to continue in Las Vegas

Pacific storm also bringing snow to mountain elevations above 8,000 feet

Make sure your windshield wipers work — Las Vegas is in for a rainy weekend.

Periods of light rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains will occur across the region today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

Measurable snow will be confined to mountain elevations above 8,000 feet, with accumulations generally of 1 to 3 inches, the weather service said.

Patches of fog will also develop in some areas this morning, reducing visibility to less than a mile, forecasters said.

The weather service's hazardous weather forecast for Sunday through Friday calls for more snow in the mountains, most likely in elevations above 8,000 feet. The highest amounts will be Sunday and Monday in the upper elevations of southern Nevada's mountains, forecasters said.

Some areas within the Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin could get substantial rainfall Sunday through Wednesday, the said. However, they aren't expecting any flooding.

As of 6 a.m. today, rainfall amounts for the last 24 hours included .07 of an inch at McCarran International Airport, .09 of an inch at North Las Vegas Airport, .03 of an inch at Nellis Air Force Base, and .01 of an inch at Henderson Executive Airport.

Afternoon temperatures through the upcoming week in the valley are expected to be close to normal, with highs in the upper 50s, they said.

At 5:56 a.m., the temperature at McCarran was 55 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 36 degrees. The record low was 22 degrees, set in 1945.

Around the valley just before 5 a.m., temperatures were 48 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 53 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 52 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures at McCarran were to be 51 degrees at 9 a.m., 57 degrees at noon and reach a high of 59 degrees by 2 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 57 degrees and the record high was 72 degrees, set in 1939.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 55 degrees by 6 p.m., to 54 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 52 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Sunday's morning low will be 50 degrees and Sunday's high will climb to 60 degrees, they said.
