House fire displaces 3, causes $75,000 damage

House fire

An accidental kitchen fire displaced a father and two teens from their house and caused an estimated $75,000 damage, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue officials said.

The family was out getting ready for Christmas when the fire was reported at 5:15 p.m. Saturday in the 5300 block of Gaborone Avenue, near West Lake Mead Boulevard and North Michael Way, officials said.

The father said they had been cooking French fries earlier in the day and left a pan of grease on the stove, officials said. He told fire officials he was sure he had shut off the stove, but the switch might have been accidentally turned on while cleaning.

The fire damaged the area around stove and the cabinets above. The kitchen and living room sustained heavy heat and smoke damage with light to moderate heat and smoke damage throughout the rest of the house, officials said.

Two pet dogs were not injured, officials said.

It took firefighters about six minutes to knock down the blaze in the single-story, wood-frame house, officials said. The fire was ruled accidental.
