Donations of socks, shoes, simple items sought for homeless veterans

It’s the simple gifts that dominate this Christmas list.

There are 44 wishes for a winter coat, 20 for socks and 16 for shoes. The requests are accompanied by stories that hint at hardship and hope, of wayward ways and desire for a chance at redemption.

That’s the Las Vegas Homeless Partners Christmas Wish List in a nutshell. Now in its third year, the Las Vegas chapter of the nonprofit organization HOPE Worldwide is partnering with U.S. Vets to help the valley’s homeless veterans.

Started by a couple in Vancouver, British Columbia, the online Christmas list allows homeless veterans to share their personal stories and request specific donations. Visitors to the website can click on a wish and story they like, pledge to donate the requested gift and deliver the donations to U.S. Vets, 525 East Bonanza Road.

The veteran’s organization will hold a Christmas dinner party next week to deliver the gifts to the individual recipients. Currently, the online list has stories and wishes from 139 veterans.

“They are always so grateful and thankful for something like a pair of socks,” said Sharon Anderson, the coordinator of the Las Vegas chapter. “It really brightens their Christmas.”

The final day to donate gifts for the homeless veterans is Dec. 22. The listing and more information about the Homeless Partners Christmas Wish List can be found at www.homelesspartners.com.
