LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Many communities would wilt without the Colorado River

Tourists from all over the world visit the Grand Canyon and Colorado River to experience outdoor pursuits that define our western way of life and drive our economy. Las Vegas and other gateway communities get an economic boost from these visitors. In fact, 39 percent of visitors to the Grand Canyon also visit Las Vegas, staying an average of three nights.

Colorado River water levels are at record lows, putting my business — and local jobs — at risk. Rapid growth and drought add to the threats facing the river basin.

The Colorado River Water Users Conference, taking place this week in Las Vegas, is an opportunity to start solving the problems that threaten the Colorado’s future as an engine of our economy and our way of life.

U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and federal Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Michael Connor recognize the economic importance of protecting the Colorado. Their effort to bring local leaders, business owners, farmers and ranchers, and others together is our best chance at finding a solution that helps everyone, including the wildlife and habitat that can’t thrive without enough water.

The writer is owner of Colorado River & Trail Expeditions, which operates rafting trips down the Grand Canyon for visitors to Las Vegas.
