Trial reset for man accused of attempted murder of ex-police chief’s son

House fire

A jury trial has been reset for January for a man accused of setting a fire to try to kill the son of a former Henderson police chief and the son's girlfriend.

The trial for Charles E. Rauch, 26, which was expected to start this week, was delayed at the request of his attorney, Benjamin Nadig.

District Judge Stefaney Miley reset the trial for 1 p.m. Jan. 18.

Rauch is accused of starting a fire in August that badly burned Michael Mayberry and his girlfriend, Jessica Caldera, at Mayberry's home at 824 Golden Plata Court.

Mayberry is the son of former police chief and former Henderson mayoral candidate Michael Mayberry.

Earlier in the evening, the younger Mayberry, who was Rauch's best friend, told Rausch he was too intoxicated to drive and should stay over at the home, prosecutors say.

Prosecutors say that for unknown reasons, possibly out of spite and anger, Rauch set the fire while Mayberry and Caldera were asleep.

Smoke detectors alerted Mayberry and Caldera to the fire while they were sleeping, according to the Henderson Fire Department.
