Official portrait of Gibbons to be unveiled Friday

CARSON CITY – The official portrait of Gov. Jim Gibbons will be unveiled to the public and hung in the state capitol Friday.

Portraits of all Nevada governors are on the walls of the capitol. Gibbons’ portrait will be next to the late Gov. Kenny Guinn.

The painting was done by Michele Rushworth of Sammamish, Wash., who was paid $20,000 for the portrait and frame. There was another $2,000 set aside for travel and other business expenses.

Teresa Moiola, spokeswoman for the state Department of Cultural Affairs, said Rushworth didn't have any problems with the painting despite the fact that Gibbons was injured and using a walker to get around after a horse-riding accident.

The portrait is at the governor’s mansion until Friday. It will be shown to his cabinet this week. Gibbons is not expected to attend the official unveiling.

The governor, according to a spokesman, is pleased with the portrait.
