LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Obama blinked before negotiation had even started

I’ve always understood that when you negotiate, each side takes a hard position, and then assuming they want to reach an agreement, concessions are made by both sides until they reach it.

That procedure was not followed, however, in the discussions President Barack Obama had with congressional Republicans, as the White House had announced in advance that the president was willing to approve an extension of the tax cuts for all. So this wasn’t a negotiation, this was capitulation by the president to Republicans’ demands.

The president tried to claim that Republicans had conceded and would approve the extension of unemployment benefits. But there is no way they would have played Scrooge and allowed 2 million Americans and their families to be without unemployment checks during this holiday season.

We Democrats rightfully are angry at this giveaway.
