Nevada State College to offer high-tech science lab training workshop

Nevada State College, in partnership with a biomedical firm, will introduce a program to familiarize students with the latest technology available in the field next week.

The college and Beckman Coulter, based in Brea, Calif., will host a special workshop starting Monday, giving 28 biology students from NSC and two students from UNLV an opportunity to work with a capillary electrophoresis instrument – an instrument that separates molecular materials. The device is state-of-the-art equipment that professionals usually learn on the job, the college said in a news release.

When the program concludes on Thursday, students will receive a certificate of training from the company, one of the largest developers of laboratory equipment in the world.

"These students will have a considerable head start over others in the biotech field that didn't have access to such high-level training," Dr. Andy Kuniyuki, the college's dean of liberal arts and sciences said in a statement.

The workshop will be held twice a year in December and May, allowing about 360 students to earn their certification.

NSC is located at 1021 E. Paradise Hills Drive in Henderson. For more information, visit NSC's website.
