Two events make winter sports accessible to disabled youth

The Paralympic Sport Club Las Vegas will host two events on Friday and Monday to introduce youth with physical and visual disabilities to winter sports.

“The Ultimate Challenge” will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Duane D. Keller Middle School, 301 Fogg St.

The carnival event features 75 students from 10 elementary schools participating in winter-themed activity stations – such as snowball throwing, penguin bowling and sledding – designed to accommodate each athlete’s cognitive and physical abilities.

“The Winter Experience” will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Las Vegas Ice Center, 9295 W. Flamingo Road.

The sled hockey and ice-skating event – now in its second year – was made possible by USA Hockey providing the specialized ice hockey sleds for athletes.

The Clark County School District Adapted Physical Education Department and Special Olympics, Nevada helped organize the two events. The district-wide, school-based Special Olympics program is now in its ninth year.

The Paralympic Sports Club is a sports program that provides training and competition for children and adults with physical disabilities throughout southern Nevada. The club provides tennis, track and field, hand cycling, tandem bike, golf, quad rugby, basketball, goalball and swimming for athletes.
