One item is commonplace in medical technology today that you might not think of as being a comfort, but it is very much so. That piece of equipment is the basic monitor they put you on that shows heart rate, blood pressure and respiration.
I had to take my daughter to the emergency room a week ago, and like any parent I was scared in large part because I didn’t know what was going on. All I could do was look at her and see that she was very sick. But the moment the staff took her from me, and had her hooked up and I could see her vitals, I felt tremendous relief knowing that people could instantly respond to any changes as they were examining her.
The monitor obviously didn’t affect her condition, but I really can’t describe how much it helped my wife and me. I would think that the hospital staff have a similar feeling, but they might take it for granted as they use it so much.
I wanted to share this as one of life’s “aha!” moments.
