Finalists named to fill District Court vacancy

Three finalists from Las Vegas are in the running to fill a judicial vacancy in Clark County District Court, Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Ron Parraguirre said today.

The finalists, chosen by the Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection, are Michael Davidson, 56, of Kolesar & Leatham; Troy Peyton, 50, of Troy E. Peyton P.C.; and Jerome Tao, 42, of the Clark County Public Defender's office.

They are vying for the Department 20 vacancy created in August by the resignation of District Judge David Wall. Gov. Jim Gibbons will appoint the new judge from among the finalists.

Davidson, Peyton and Tao emerged from among 19 applicants.

In selecting the finalists, the commission considered the applicants’ interviews along with information in comprehensive applications about education, law practice, business involvement, community involvement, professional and personal conduct and health. The commission also considered letters of reference and public comment.

No time limit exists for the governor to make a judicial appointment. But if an appointment is not made within 30 days following submission of names by the commission, the governor may make no other appointments to public office.

Whoever the governor selects must run in the 2012 election to retain the seat.
