Jayme Server of the Boulder City Ballet Company takes a leap during last year’s performance of “The Nutcracker.” This year’s three-day run opens on Friday.

The magic of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" will return to the historic Boulder Theatre this weekend.

Performed by the Boulder City Ballet Company for the 15th year, the show – which is sold out -- has become a staple of Las Vegas Valley holiday season, said Amy Arnaz, its director, who has been taking names on a waiting list.

The show opens Friday.

The ballet company's 115 girls, ages 8 to 17, will take the stage in new costumes this year, said Arnaz, who has also owned Boulder Theatre for 15 years.

Justin Lex, a teacher for the company, will reprise the role of the titular Nutcracker.

Although she tries to bring new elements to the show each year, Arnaz said she focuses on the classic story for its strong ties to the Christmas season.

"I'm one of those people who loves Christmas," she said. "This is small town America, where the spirit of Christmas is most welcome. (The show) ushers in the holiday."
