Regarding Larry Burgess’ Wednesday letter to the editor, “Lobbyists have turned U.S. into their playground”:
These so-called lobbyists are in reality just special interest groups. This is not a new thing; history tells us this country has always been run by special interest groups. Our Founding Fathers were a group of rich landowners and merchants who were not looking for freedom but were lobbying King George for lower taxes.
Who have these lobbyists been? Could they have been federalists, slave owners, abolitionists, land developers, free traders, women’s equal rights groups, railroad barons, high tariff groups, trade unions (including teachers, government workers, Teamsters and auto workers), rich industrialists, anti-globalization groups, global warming groups, pro-life groups, Planned Parenthood, trial lawyers, socialists, anti-socialist groups and maybe even Warren Buffet lobbying the government to “please” let him pay higher taxes? And the list goes on.
A case can be made that our government could not function without the direction from these lobbyist/special interest groups. Maybe we have found the enemy and they are us?
