Warm weekend ahead for runners, wranglers in Las Vegas

Afternoon temperatures to hit 60s through Sunday

Cowboys and marathoners will find Las Vegas has lassoed a warm weekend for the ongoing National Finals Rodeo, Saturday's Great Santa Run and Sunday's Zappos.com Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon.

Partly sunny skies, morning temperatures in the mid 40s and afternoon temperatures in the low 60s are on tap for Las Vegas today through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

A ridge of high pressure centered over northwestern Mexico will keep generally dry conditions over the desert Southwest through Saturday night, the weather service said.

Some light snow is possible along the Sierra crest through Saturday night, forecasters said.

A Pacific storm system is expected to move across the area late Sunday through Monday, bringing locally gusty winds and chances for rain in the valleys and snow in area mountains, they said. Snow amounts late Sunday through Sunday night could be significant in the Sierra, they said.

At 4:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 42 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 39 degrees. The record low was 23 degrees, set in 1948 and 1945.

Around the valley just before 5 a.m., temperatures were 39 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 35 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 39 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 55 degrees by 9 a.m., to 61 degrees by noon and reach a high of 63 degrees by 2 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 60 degrees and the record high was 77 degrees, set in 1980.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 57 degrees by 6 p.m., to 55 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 52 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Saturday's morning low will be 46 degrees and Saturday's high will climb to 60 degrees, they said.
