LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Tax-cut debate exposes GOP hypocrisy

It seems inconsistent to me that the same politicians who are strongly urging America to reduce the debt are the ones who want to extend the George W. Bush tax cuts to the rich. In 10 years, they all agree it will cost the government $700 billion in lost revenue if the tax rate for these wealthy people is not returned to where it was before the temporary tax cut was passed.

How can one argue for one issue, then take an opposite stance on another? Do they think that the average American doesn’t realize how stupid this sounds?

President Barack Obama has the duty to listen to the new majority in Congress and show them that he, unlike the Congress he had to work with before the election, is willing to compromise with them for a better America, for solutions to the problems we face. If he can’t do that, he does not deserve to be in the White House a second term.

Using that argument, if the new Congress is not able to make compromises, its members do not deserve re-election either. We, the people, elect our leaders to work for us. We have been blaming one side or the other for too long.

We should give them a chance, but they, in turn, should show us they are listening.
