Metro officer fires several shots at man outside business
Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010 | 11:48 p.m.
Officer-involved shooting
A Metro Police officer fired multiple shots at a man Wednesday night in the eastern Las Vegas Valley, leaving the man critically wounded.
Police Capt. Patrick Neville said dispatchers received a call at 9:12 p.m. about unknown trouble at an office building at 3430 East Flamingo Road, near Pecos-McLeod. Police said an officer pulled into the parking lot and saw a man standing outside a pickup truck.
Neville said there was a confrontation between the officer and the man, prompting the officer to fire about five shots at the man. Police weren't releasing other details about the confrontation or events leading up to it.
The man, who police said appeared to be in his early 40s, was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition, Neville said. The officer wasn't injured.
Police weren't releasing details late Wednesday about whether the man was armed.
Neville said the officer hadn't been interviewed Wednesday night. No one else witnessed the shooting, police said.
The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in cases of officer-involved shootings. The officer's name hasn't been released.

Beware GESTAPO 911.
Read the story in today's RJ titled "Officer under suspicion." It's a blockbuster about Yant.
Maybe the guy made a "furtive" movement that caused the officer to fear for his life....case closed, no need for a coroners inquest.
Cops need real leadership and supervision. Bad attitudes gravitate from the top. The public must, must demand accountability. No more cover ups. No more idiot excuses. No more slaughtered citizens. No more coroner's inquests. No more having the fox investigating the chicken-house killings and attempted killings. No more paid administrative leave while the investigating fox concludes the bad fox was just doing what foxes do naturally, kill chickens. Put those officers and their supervises on public trail. The shootings will stop tomorrow!
And here we go again, I hope the guy wasn't taking a shortcut or applying chapstick.
Nice catch, NoMorePC, that story really details what a criminal Yant truly is.
We live in a Barney Fifedom.
No, at least Mayberry was smart enough not to let Barney Fife have bullets.
The corners inquest is clearly a waste of time, taxpayers revenue & should be abolished. I see no point in turning zeros into heros at taxpayer expense.
Metro was deserving of our respect at one time, but not right now....A lot of of the problems ( my opinion ) stem from bad union leadership which, such as the 120 mph wrecks, translates into looking an awful lot like Sheriff Gillespie is making a huge mess of things...
So in the end, the Sheriff, local union leadership, and any known bad cops are in serious need of a good old fashioned bums rush.....
Only than can we get back to supporting Metro like we should.
Newsflash!!! Yant lied about another drug case, check out the RJ today. Why didn't this come out before the Inquest? Coverup? All that is necessary for evil to win is for good people to do nothing. If you want to do something, if you really care and want to make our community better, here is a way to do it. Write a letter, make a phone call, and express your outrage. Send your letters to this man Thomas E. Perez Assistant Attorney General Civil Rights Division 950 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington DC 20530 phone(202)514-4609 fax:(202)514-0293 If you truly care and want to do something for the Cole family and get them justice, write to Mr. Perez.
Just check out the website for the Department of Justice. How about the Minneapolis cop who is facing federal charges for beating up a kid? Yep, Attorney General. How about the deputy sheriff in Choctaw County OK who will spend 18 months in a federal prison for beating up some inmates? Yep, right again, Attorney General. How about the two police officers in Tuba City Arizona, who have been indicted for violating Civil rights of a suspect, one for beating him, and his supervisor for not stopping it? Right again, the Attorney General. How about the two New Orleans cops who are facing life in a federal prison, for you guessed it, civil rights violations. One more time, Attorney General. How about the two Natchez Mississippi police officer who were indicted for civil rights violations for beating two people who had been arrested? Yep, Attorney General again. All of these have been announced since July 29, 2010. How do you think the Attorney General found out about those cases? To paraphrase the theme from Cops, what you gonna go when the feds come for you?
If you don't believe me follow the link.
http://www.justice.gov/crt/
Why didn't the info about Yant come out before the Inquest? Did the DA know this was coming? Can you say COVERUP?
@sandy,
Acknowledged that Trevon Cole was likely flushing MJ down the toilet when he was shot.
Do you think at any point the coroner's jury ever pondered "Why was Trevon Cole applying chapstick at the time he was flushing the MJ?"
And now, it's obvious Yant is a crooked cop.
The people that make up the coroner's jury have to be the most gullible people on earth. Could it be that Yant planted the chapstick after the fact as an excuse to shoot Cole?
Pretty shocking how dumb and gullible people can be.
@Tanker.
You nailed it. Convenient that this investigation is occurring AFTER the inquest. Without credible testimony from Yant, since he is now proven to be a crooked cop, the entire Trevon Cole inquest is but a farce.
This whole thing just gets more outrageous every day, and Dougie-Boy Gillespie continues to cover up for his crooked cops.
Can't wait to see what this is about.
Did citizen not comply with cop and thus in turn made cop angry and hurt his feelings? You didn't do what I told you, so you deserve to be shot?
Is that all they teach these cowboys at metro?
I even wonder if this guy has any sort of weapon.
One thing for sure, another cop on paid leave.
This is the problem with a police force that whitewashes bad shootings; now every time there is a police shooting people will just assume it was a bad one, and who can blame them?
No checks, no balances.
Contact your County Commissioner today, and demand action on this corrupt police department, starting from the top down.
Has the officer been tested for drugs? If not, why?
Las Vegas will not have a competent, honest or accountable Police agency until leadership is changed.
The changes needed cannot come until the Sheriff position/department is eliminated and we become the City and County of Clark (or Las Vegas).
The Chief of Police must be an appointed position, with removal possible at the discretion of the city/county leaders. Outside applicants need to be considered (bring in an ex-chief or high ranking official from LAPD, CHP, San Jose etc., someone untouched by the graft, corruption and just plain incompetence of local Law Enforcement).
Anyway, I'm sure this shooting was already signed off as 'justifiable' at 08:59 p.m.
Chunky says:
While he doesn't particularly trust the police, the milliseconds between life and death when you're facing a determine adversary are too small to count.
Law enforcement officers and individuals have to know BEFORE they are attacked exactly what their "line in the sand" is prior to the use of deadly force. There's no time to make moral and ethical decisions in the heat of battle when someone else has already made the decision to kill you, your partner or a loved one.
While Chunky fully believes the cops will cover for and protect their own using whatever means possible, he also does not believe the average police officer is out there "gun-slinging". Probably if we saw the unfiltered images and violence they see everyday, we'd all be a bit more prepared to protect ourselves first rather than be victims later.
That's what Chunky thinks!
@Vegasm
Anyway, I'm sure this shooting was already signed off as 'justifiable' at 08:59 p.m."
++++
Not exactly true.
It will be turned over for a Coroner's Inquest after a thorough investigation that should conclude sometime tomorrow morning.
+++++
Beware GESTAPO 911.
'No one else witnessed the shooting'
How convenient
Here we go again!!!!
If the suspect survives, there will not be a coroner's inquest. Just wanted to make that clear for a few of you posting here.
Noindex says:
Chunky the third person writing is VERY annoying. Please stop.
That's what Noindex thinks!
SSDD!! I'm so sick of Metro! But, people, unless we vote out Gillespie, it will be business as usual. Every single Metro cop with a gun is dangerous. Too much ego, not enough experience, and if they spent LESS time on their cellphones and MORE time patrolling neighborhoods, MAYBE we could call them a police department. For now, they're just a death squad!
Geez, here we go again.
As for the LVRJ scoop, its no surprise that Yant is a crooked cop.
If Metro's leadership had instilled the proper core values, Yant would have been removed from duty after he offered testimony that conflicted with physical evidence at his last inquest. And if the inquest process truly worked, Yant would never have had the opportunity to kill Cole, much less be "justified" at this latest inquest. Although you've got to wonder why Yant's history of lying in official paperwork was only made public after the Cole inquest, while during the inquest Yant stated he only made a "mistake".
Instead of getting rid of Yant after his previous shootings, taxpayers paid him $103,000 per year to continue his crime spree unchecked by Metro's leadership or the inquest process. Yant needs to go to jail. And let's not forget, we now have yet another officer, David Goris, who is caught in the lie in the Sigler case.
I'm sure that we'll see the usual suspects defending Metro once again and denying the problem. But the broader community must stand up and demand reform. Let's not forget that INTERPOL was once headed by folks like Reinhard Heydrich, who commanded the Nazi SS and Kurt Daluege who was executed by the Allies for war crimes in 1946. I'm not equating Metro to pre-WWII INTERPOL. But police organizations hold power and corrupt people are often drawn to organizations with power. It is essential that police organizations weed out individuals that lie or abuse their power. Strict discipline must be enforced when it comes to ethical behavior.
In the shorter term, we also need to find out how many other people were charged and/or convicted based on Yant's lies....
...and yet again. Didn't I see this movie once before? I bet we all know what the ending is.
Chunky has it right. Chunky for Sheriff!
If you've ever seen the show "Vegas Jailhouse" you will see what a legal gang looks like. Our metro is just a bunch of paid punks that got bullied in school and now it's pay-back time. The Death Squad strikes again. Suicide is easy in this town...just call metro. They get upset when we pull our legal weapons cause they didnt get to shoot first.
Comment removed by moderator. Language.
The guy must have farted and startled the cop. You know how jumpy (AKA trigger happy) them cops can be in Vegas.
Considering the publics trust's been shattered. Now maybe the time to invest in cameras and videos. Dash cams for all police vehicles and videos recorders to tape each and every home invasion (SWAT raid).
@Tanker1975 they said to either write or fax them what the problem is.

@bestbet216. The address and fax numbers are shown. Let the Feds know how we feel about what is happening at Metro.
I suppose that the suspect turned quickly to look at the arresting officer. Yep, he made a furtive movement towards me so I shot 5 times.
If metro keeps treating the valley like their own personal shooting gallery & the joke coroners inquest system does not change, the assembly should mandate that all law enforcement must have a pistol mounted camera like some departments have for tasers. The technology already exists with companies like PistolCam.
Okay everyone.. let's at least give THIS officer the benefit of the doubt! We have no info on why he felt he needed to shoot, who he is, who he shot, nothing. Although I understand that we are all upset, with good cause, over the OIS lately, we may want to remember that not all of Metro is Yant. Not all of Metro lies. Maybe there are more than a few bad apples but the rank and file, they have no alternative but to continue to do the job and try to overcome the Yants on the force. I personally know a few Metro officers, and I would trust them with my life. With all of that said, let's see how this plays out before making snap judgements on another officer. Remember, some of the Metro defenders made snap judgements to defend Yant, and look where that is now...
capt neville is handling this one...im sure its gonna have tons of discrepancies such as the costco shooting.
this shooting has no details, but with no video, no witnesses, its the shot mans word over metro and we know who will win no matter what.
why does metro not have video and audio recording systems in their cars and on their person like many other departments do? maybe instead of hiring 10 more zit faced arrogant jerks they call cops invest that cash into some kind of recording system.
@maukflauk. I agree completely. The details of the investigation need to come out. Hopefully, Metro has gotten smarter and will do this one by the book. I will reserve judgement, until the facts are presented.
However, if people are upset about the new revelations about Yant, that is a different case altogether. Send the faxes, write the letters.
My husband is a cop and I feel that most, not all, shootings are legit and if people would just stay calm, obey orders, and stay out of trouble this wouldn't happen. I feel for police officers and the situations they are put in every day and we should all have more respect for them. BUT having said that, I know the guy that was shot and I can't tell you how sad and shocked I am. This is a hard working, loving father and husband and I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt he had any kind of weapon! Yes, the economy is hitting us all hard and he could have been upset or under an unbelievable amount of stress, but what in the world happened where this officer couldn't have just tazed him first, thrown him on the ground and cuffed him?? Given, I wasn't there and I don't know any details, but I'm having the hardest time going through this in my head. This man has been a good friend, and unselfish person that would help anyone. I'm heartbroken for him and his family! I am sad for the officer and his family too, but I would really like to know more. This is ridiculous!
wow this is getting scary...no witnesses to the shooting...nice...and the little article in the RJ that includes picture of officer Yant is an interesting read ...too bad its a day late & a dollar short for trevon cole ... the scott inquest will show the difference when education and cash flow are involved...the fbi needs to get involved in what is being allowed to happen within metro...someone posted either here or on the rj that when they now see a metro vehicle they have a completely different emotion than before...i couldn't agree more w/that poster...these guys don't even make eye contact with people not a nod or acknowlegement ...they want to be feared not respected...i found the most interesting post from ewsoup an officers wife ... i see metro on a daily basis where i work..the strip & casino cops have a totally different mentality...they have a people persona yet are respected and interactive...so no all is not lost with metro forever...we just need the yants gillespies rogers and nevilles just to name a few gone baby gone
I support the idea of equiping Metro with dashcams but Metro does not have dash mounted cameras and other recording devices because they can't afford it... It would cost millions to equip all of the vehicles and officers with that equipment. Metro hasn't hired a new officer in almost 9 months.
Dang, I gotta go to Vegas next month, and my bullet proof vest hasn't come in yet. Maybe I'll be ok if I don't take chap stick or ziploc bags, with me.
"I support the idea of equiping Metro with dashcams but Metro does not have dash mounted cameras and other recording devices because they can't afford it... "
In 2005, there was a quarter cent increased to the sales tax added to provide Metro with additional funds to hire more cops. That fund now has $123,000,000 in reserves and the city's population is not growing the way it was in 2005. There is no longer a need for more cops. The taxpayers have made Metro the best-funded government agency in the state, so much so that they have over one hundred million in the bank.
Many Metro police officers now pull in over $100,000 per year in compensation.
Sorry, I don't buy the "but we don't have enough money to buy dash cams" when there are police departments across the country that are nowhere near as well-funded as Metro and they've had dash cams for years.
Me thinks Cole may have had some dirt on Yant, that's why he was executed.
@SummerlinCC - dash cams only work if the action takes place right in front of the car. There are some systems available that have an interior camera view as well. But there is nothing on the market that has a 360 degree view.
I'm guessing most of these shooting still wouldn't be captured on video.
5 shotz?
Any reason why the entire magazine wasn't emptied?
voice of reason, dash cams do work because there is audio attached to them via a mike on the officer. there are also things called taser cams available but metro cops dont use tasers so those are useless.
time to find tools that can hold these thugs we call peace officers accountable.
you're so right summerlincc... that's the way the story goes for EVERYTHING in good ole vegas...worse schools in the usa ...cut backs and lack of programs for & within schools ...u name it but in the sake of gaming revenue and protecting the law from themselves that's are no hold barred on the cost ....we are friggen light years behind...we moved here from ny 20 years ago when this place was "Boom Town" raised our children here and have been hard working tax payers to watch this place develope into an armpit of a place to be....won't even pump gas or utilize an outside atm after 830 at night...oh and just had to add ...all the shootings that were accredited to jesse james the most feared out law was that he shot them in the back...a true coward..lots of jesse james within metro for sure........i pray for justice in the scott case & restructure within our police & government departments...and good ole oscar the good time mayor just keeps quietly sipping lol
What do you expect? Metro officers wrote the book -- literally-- on officer involved shootings.
http://www.police-writers.com/criminal_i...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAHAHAHHAHAAHAHAHA @bghs1986 i love it
@sigtwenty - you're right, there is audio but only if the mic pack gets turned on, and if it does you hear the verbal exchange. Still not video to back up the audio.
Taser cams only work is the taser is on. If the officer is using deadly force the taser is in the holster, so still no video.
It wouldn't matter if METRO had cameras in all their cars because at every shooting, the cameras would somehow malfunction.
No No No No we don't wait and see what becomes of it, That's how an investigation is done you speculate on various scenarios until you find the one that fits the evidence or actions of all party's, Don't handicap your self by saying I should wait and let someone else tell me what happened.
Further more as a step father to a police officer in a different state than Nevada I will tell you I do respect officers but that respect is also earned and where are these good officers who are supposed to be in abundance and why have they not yet to cast them from there company.
The respect that these good officers deserve is fleeting with there silence of the corrupted ones
We already know the outcome of a coroner's inquest...shooting justified. Just rubber stamp the investigation report. It will save the taxpayers thousands of dollars as the outcome will be the same as the previous ones.
it may not matter if audio is the only source of info, but its something. its a reminder that these cops have protocol and training to follow and its not being followed.
if nhp can use a taser on a crowded highway on someone that is being violent, why cant cops like yank or yant or whatever his name is pistol whip a suspect that does not even have a gun and was crouching on the floor?
metro has no accountability. period. i wanna be a metro cop so i can start shooting my neighbors that are loud and stupid and say they knocked on my door holding a gun at the peephole so i shot them.
the only way to weed out the scumbags is by the public complaint, with audio and video whenever possible for every interaction with police to back up their arrogant attitude that you are complaining about and submit it to the fbi, and metro internal affairs and tell IA that the feds have a copy of this video so you cant manipulate it. metro is a disgrace to law enforcement.
if i was a hiring person in another police department or any job for that matter, and i saw metro pd on their resume, i would throw it out immediately. i would never hire anyone that worked for metro. there are plenty of other qualified less arrogant people out there
I'm not saying anything about this particular shooting, but does anyone ever stop to think that people are just acting crazier, and its not just metro being trigger happy? when people get poor, crime rate goes up, when crime rate goes up so does the likely-hood of officer involved shootings... AND you cant blame an entire department for the acts of a few people... But I suppose next time someone pulls a gun on an officer they should just let themselves get shot just so noone can say anything, right?
Metro is out of control! Why do officer's even carry non-lethal weapons. All training should consist of trips to the firing range. All 50/50 situations should favor civilians. No more shooting unarmed citizens. If you didn't realize being an officer was dangerous, then you should not have applied. Should the police get paid more, yes. But should we continue to accept the excuse, I thought he was armed. Use your training and take a suspect down without shooting.
"5 shotz?
Any reason why the entire magazine wasn't emptied?"
Gun jammed?
@ Las Vegas Sun,
Why haven't you reported anything on the Yants case????
ewsoup said, "My husband is a cop and I feel that most, not all, shootings are legit and if people would just stay calm, obey orders, and stay out of trouble this wouldn't happen."
How come then cops in other cities face the same issues but do not find the need to always shoot?
@VoiceofReason: No, dash cams wouldn't have caught most of the shootings on tape. Certainly, it wouldn't have caught Yant's shooting of Cole. It might have been able to catch today's shooting. But my concern isn't only about what has happened in the past, it's about what will happen in the future as well.
After the Darling, Carrillo, Sigler, Cole and Scott cases, there are going to be a number of citizens that aren't going to trust the word of a Metro officer, even under oath. The dishonesty has gone from what many thought was an isolated incident in the Darling case to a pattern of dishonesty. Sad to say, Metro's leadership failed to take steps to create an ethical command climate and the result is an organization whose word is discredited. Dash cams can help uphold an honest officer's testimony or contradict a dishonest officer's testimony. It's not a panacea and dash cam won't capture everything, but it would be a useful step.
@ewsoup you said "but what in the world happened where this officer couldn't have just tazed him first, thrown him on the ground and cuffed him??"
nice
The Police State, nice.
I figured it out... these officers need to get their kids registered at school, take that last little vacation, and had no other way to get the time off with pay! LOL
IS THIS ALL THERE IS TO KNOW???
"...dispatchers received a call at 9:12 p.m. about [another incident of] UNKNOWN TROUBLE at an office building ... Police said an officer ... saw a man standing outside a pickup truck ... there was a confrontation ... prompting the officer to fire about five shots at the man."
"No one else (?) witnessed the shooting."
WELL, WHAT ABOUT THE PERSON WHO CALLED IN THE "UNKNOWN TROUBLE." Is this another case (like COSTCO) of overly agressive police action?
The woman who wrote, herein, about knowing the man who was shot - does not believe he had a gun. So, why then couldn't the police captain tell the LV SUN reporter why the cop had to fire FIVE ROUNDS into a person standing by a truck? Even a preliminary explanation would could have been stated - and I am sure that the police captain DID GET AN EXPLANATION BEFORE THE OFFICER WENT HOME, LAST NIGHT.
I know it is presumptuous of me, but my FIRST TAKE on this shooting is that the COP did not look very far to find some "UNKNOWN TROUBLE" in response to the "vague" complaint of trouble. It seems that he just confronted the man at his pickup truck (as no one else was around to pick on) - and, after perhaps demanding that the man MOVE ON, the officer got into a verbal contest with the man - and the officer decided the man was a "imminent danger or threat" and he had to shoot him.
FIVE TIMES? This sounds like another rookie who got scared - unless the man had a gun!
Well, this might wind up as a case of unnecessary USE OF FORCE, reckless endangerment, and maybe even improper interrogation techniques - used when questioning the man.
No witnesses. Flamingo & Pecos at 9pm and no witnesses. LOL. Yep, that intersection and the adjacent strip malls and gas stations are totally empty at 9pm. Nobody around at all to witness the cruiser parked with lights on in the parking lot confronting this individual. I can totally see how this could be hard to miss...right out in the open and all.
Kind of like a guy getting shot at a big box store with video cameras all over the place, but the video is 'corrupted'. No patterns here.
At least Gillespie chose an accurate adjective for the Costco tape. Corrupted seems to be a fairly apt description.
oh dear....
we finally seem to have a living victim. hold your breath folks this one's gonna get gooooood!
Can somebody tell me how I can answer this question from my 4 year old grandson tonight. "Pop-pop, you told me the police help us and I can always go to a policeman. If I go to a policeman will he shoot me? They shoot lots of people."
I pray that he STAYS alive, and recovers.
@mush:
maybe they'll taser him so he'll depart the hospital in a body bag.
There has been an update to this story that indicates this was an attempt at "suicide by cop".
One must admit, if you wish to do this, there is not better way than to choose Metro as the instrument.
metro Killers / Qu'est-ce que c'est / fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better / Run run run run run run run away
I just love how everybody rushes to judgement before all the facts are out.
The individual that called the police WAS the suspect... it was a set-up, HE WANTED TO DIE.
What about the officer being put in this situation by a person that WANTS to die ?
How many times do you see a police car with lights on? Do you stop your car and pull out lawn chairs to watch the action unfold ?
I agree that the Cole shooting was wrong, but we can't dump every police officer into a basket and lable them as "trigger happy thugs" Each situation is different and needs to be treated that way. It would be like saying that every person with brown hair robs 7-11, it just isnt so, but some of the people that rob 7-11 do in fact have brown hair.
I am sure people will say I blindly support the police which would be a false statement... I have been on ride-a-longs with Metro, NLVPD, Hendo and even NHP and I encourage everyone to do so. It is a real eye opener.
Think about it... people don't call the police when they are having a great day and all is well, the police are called when things are bad or going bad.
Wow vegas cops shoot alot of people....they need a courage under fire test... and make all police learn how to fight so they dont have to shoot everyone that puts up some resistance.....if i got pulled over there i would be pretty worried i was going to get shot....Justice Dept....time
I'm surprised no one has brought up what metro is quietly doing..have you guys noticed all metro cruisers have 2 antennas now ?..well metro has spent atleast a confirmed $10 million dollars on a new radio system. A system so new it still has many flaws but not one..a very important one...It is an un-scannable radio system. which means no one but metro will be able to listen to their radio transmissions from now on. It gets better...they could have spent alot less money and switched to an already working system like SNACC or EDACS..which HPD, NLVPD, NHP,..and pretty much every emergency agency in CC and NV uses, There are still plenty of frequencies to go around..but no, metro has chosen to go the expensive and incognito route. Surprised?
SWAT and tactical units have already switched over, but i hear metro is having issues with the full switch..they were supposed to switch over months ago but are still fixing the well known system bugs. Im sure gillespie would of loved for that to have happen prior to costco..
