State reconsidering request to pump water from upstate

Friday, Aug. 20, 2010 | 2:05 a.m.

CARSON CITY — State Engineer Jason King has set new deadlines for handling the applications filed in 1989 to pump billions of gallons of water from rural Nevada to Las Vegas.

King hopes to make a final decision by December 2011 on the requests of the Southern Nevada Water Authority to draw groundwater from the Spring, Cave, Dry Lake and Delamar valleys in Eastern Nevada.

The Supreme Court in February overturned the ruling of the previous state engineer, Tracy Taylor, that allowed 58,000 acre feet to be pumped to Southern Nevada to take care of its population. As a result, the case returned to its original applications.

The water authority filed new applications in January and there were 2,300 protests lodged.

King anticipates hearings to be held in July and August 2011 in Carson City.

The Supreme Court voided the previous decision because the water ruling for SNWA was not made within a year.

King said, “All are hereby informed that the state engineer is going to complete the hearing and decision-making process within that one-year time frame.”
