Fatal crash

A woman died this morning after the car she was riding in went through a stop sign and into the desert in the south Las Vegas Valley, Metro Police said. The driver was critically injured.

Investigators said the one-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Erie Avenue and South Las Vegas Boulevard about 2 a.m. That location is between Las Vegas Boulevard's intersections with Silverado Ranch Boulevard and St. Rose Parkway.

The vehicle, a 2010 Dodge Challenger, was traveling west at a “high rate of speed” at the time of the crash, police said. Investigators said the driver, identified as Jason Gallagher, 37, of Henderson, drove through a stop sign and the vehicle became airborne after crossing Las Vegas Boulevard at the T-shaped intersection.

The Dodge rolled several times in the desert before it came to rest on its wheels, police said.

Gallagher was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit in critical condition, investigators said. Information about woman who died wasn't available. The Clark County Coroner's Office will release her name and age.

This is the 49th traffic-related fatality this year in Metro’s jurisdiction, police said.
