Recovery Act to fund green upgrades to Las Vegas apartment complex

Federal funding is coming to a Las Vegas apartment complex to assist with retrofitting it to be green-friendly.

Rep. Shelley Berkley on Thursday released a statement announcing $2 million of Recovery Act funding will go toward improvements at Stella Fleming Towers, near the intersection of Alta Drive and South Decatur Boulevard.

“This $2 million Recovery Act funding is creating jobs in Southern Nevada and the improvements being made at Stella Fleming Towers will deliver long-term savings for residents on their energy costs," Berkley said in a statement. "Green retrofits lower energy bills, reduce water use and improve air quality and that’s good for our community, good for the environment and great for the residents who call Stella Fleming Towers home."

The funding goes to upgrades that reduce energy costs, cut water consumption and improve indoor air quality.

The Green Retrofit Program is designed to create jobs as workers upgrade older federally assisted multi-family apartment developments. Nevada is receiving a total of $2.7 million under the program.

Berkley announced the upgrades to Stella Fleming Towers along with officials from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Las Vegas City Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian and Monsignor Patrick Leary of Catholic Charities.

Stella Fleming Towers has 115 units.

Also funded were green retrofits to the McFarland Apartments in Las Vegas and Yerington Manor in Yerington, Nev.
