Things are beginning to heat up in the UNLV men's basketball coaching staff's quest to land a top-flight point-guard recruit as a member of the 2011 class.
A source close to the program confirmed to the Sun on Tuesday that Lon Kruger & Co. will host two candidates to fill that spot on official visits this fall.
The two players headed to town are Jabarie Hinds of Mount Vernon, N.Y., and Jahii Carson of Mesa, Ariz.
Hinds is rated as a 3-star prospect by Rivals.com, and both the No. 23 point-guard prospect and No. 108 overall recruit in the 2011 crop.
The final three schools he's expected to choose from looks like quite the random palette — UNLV, West Virginia and Oklahoma State. Hinds has also drawn scholarship offers, according to Rivals, from UConn, Wake Forest, Louisville and several others.
UNLV's connection to the 6-foot, 160-pound Hinds is that he attends the same high school that produced current Rebels assistant coach Lew Hill. The staff has recruited him for some time now.
He is expected to be on UNLV's campus at some point in September. Kruger and Hill are expected to make a trip out east for an in-home visit before then, too.
Meanwhile, of the several point guard prospects the staff is looking at in the 2011 group, Carson's name arguably carries the most weight nationally.
Carson is a 4-star prospect, according to Rivals, and has the attention of every major West Coast program.
At one point, Oregon State had drawn a soft commitment from Carson, who Rivals has as the No. 10 point guard and No. 49 overall recruit for 2011.
Carson reopened his recruitment not long after and is believed to have Arizona, Arizona State, UNLV and Washington near the top of his list.
A dynamic scorer and floor general at just 5-foot-10, Carson was in Las Vegas twice this summer, first for the adidas Nations training camp, then again for the adidas Super 64.
Sources indicate that he could be in town the weekend of Oct. 15-17, which is the same weekend that UNLV will host its annual FirstLook event and begin practices.
So far, UNLV's lone commitment in the 2011 class is from 6-foot-6 Notre Dame (Mass.) Prep forward Grandy Glaze, who is listed by Rivals as the No. 23 power forward and No. 129 overall recruit in his class.
Behind Glaze, the Rebels still have three more scholarships left to fill for the 2011-12 season. They also have an available scholarship entering the 2010-11 season, leaving open the possibility of adding a mid-year transfer.

Sound like a few good PGs to me! Some tough schools to recruit up against, but I think we could land one of them.
Both of them are very good and I would love to land either or both, but Carson is just plain nasty.
Do yourself a favor and youtubr Jahii. Although only 5;11" he can still throw down with the best of them. He has incredible control and leeaping ability out of this world.
Yes your right "TarkDaysWeMiss" lets not report any recruits that visit. In fact lets not report any news about the program. That sounds like a great idea. When you decide to stop living in the 90's please let us know ... until then shut the MOUTH!!!!
You mean like Marshall, Lopez, Massamba, QT, Oscar, Moser, Jasper, Tre, Chace and Hawkins? Because all of them were 3+ star recruits.
Get a life.
haters wanna hate, lovers wanna love, i just wanna do, none of the above, i wanna.....
I agree...we got one of the best, popular, and prestigious basketball programs in the country!! If you dont like it, DONT WATCH!
TarkDaysWeMiss, maybe you should focus your negative energy somewhere else, or you could hope we land one of these two. There visit is a reflection of Lons good recruiting, since they can only choose 5 schools to look at officially.
TarkDaysWeMiss Oh and Glaze, is a 4 star recruit.
Ultimately it's up to the kid if they want to go to one school or another. I feel with the new basketball complex being built, it's only going to help potential recruits choose UNLV over somewhere else.
TarkDays,
Tarkanian built a program on 3 star recruits and transfers. Get a history book out and read it. No one had heard of Armon Gilliam. No one wanted Jarvis Basknight, Geral Paddio, Anderson Hunt, Moses Scurry, George Ackles, Daid Butler, MArcus Wade. Tark built teams on players that no one wanted. Even LJ was a transfer, moron.
Further, these top 100 players that you say we can never get are also three star recruits. Top 100 ain't bad, jackass.
Washed up transfers? Yeah Tre, Chace, Jasper and Moser are washed up. They were all top 100 players, and Moser was top 20.
Please educate yourself, and according to ESPN and SI UNLv is a top 10 program. Pretty good out of 350 chools. I would say top 3% is elite.
What reagan21 said.
Well lets hope that Hinds comes our way because Carson committed today to his home town ASU Sun Devils. I really can't blame him the Devils are a good team and Sedeck has them improving.
Tark days, can you tell me recruits that tark brought in that were 5 star quality meat. We all know LJ, Augmon was not. Greg Anthony went to Portland instead of the Rebels, we should of fired Tark that very day with your expert reasoning. Shut your pie hole, your showing us what you really know. Reggie, Sidney and LJ, that is the list of great recruits Tark landed. Ed O'bannon and Tarver were after the championship and they never came. I loved Tark and the Rebs for all of his time, but pull your head out and get a grip,Tark ain't coming back. When we got Lon no real coach even wanted the job. Great job LK, keep up the good work.
