Las Vegas sees visitor increase, room rates up 6 percent
Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 | 10:38 a.m.
Tourism officials reported today that Las Vegas continued to see an increase in visitors in June while the average daily room rate also inched upward.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said Las Vegas had more than 3.1 million visitors in June, which is up 4.3 percent from 2.98 million visitors in June 2009. The occupancy rate, 82.1 percent, remained stable because of a 5 percent increase in room inventory over the past year.
Monthly visitor volume has surpassed the prior year's level in Las Vegas nine of the past 10 months -- the only drop being a 0.1 percent decline in February.
The average daily room rate increased 6 percent over the year, from $84.50 to $89.54, the LVCVA said. The number of room nights occupied in Las Vegas was up about 5 percent, to more than 3.6 million in June.
Convention attendance slipped 1 percent while the number of conventions in the city was down about 10 percent.
The LVCVA reported that the number of passengers using McCarran International Airport was down 1 percent compared to June 2009, but traffic at the Nevada/California state line on Interstate 15 increased 4 percent.
Visitor volume in June was down 3.4 percent in Laughlin compared to a year earlier, while Mesquite recorded a 6.6 percent decline, the LVCVA said.
The LVCVA numbers came out the same day that the Gaming Control Board reported casino win on the Strip was down 7.6 percent in June. Officials have said that visitors to Las Vegas are spending less, while gamblers also won more than normal at casinos last month.
NOTE: This story was changed to reflect that February recorded a 0.1 percent decline in visitor volume compared to a year ago.

Hope it keeps improving.
" Officials have said that visitors to Las Vegas are spending less, while gamblers also won more than normal at casinos last month."
I find this hard to believe..
if convention business keeps dropping then gaming revenue will also keep dropping no matter how many extra people come
Why is everybody reporting in the red?
I'll be in town to catch the RUSH concert!
It's about time...
fully expected this to be a nice spin on a month with 5 weekends...Not the case as June did not have it this year (or last year for that matter).
Good to see and I see no holes to punch in these numbers
The key is to see if the trend continues, you can't draw any conclusions on one months numbers. It's a good start but we need 11 more to make a year.
This paper - Visitor count up 6%. Other paper - Gaming win down 6.65%
If you build it, they will come - Too bad all we will have to show for it will be trampled corn!
It's easy to show increses over last year..we had no where to go but up..let's look at month to month for '10..
Is it just me or does everyone else notice that the newspaper frequently reports conflicting information from one day to the next?
Don't believe anything you hear from the LVCVA
Las Vegas is really still looking good.
Why is everyone reporting in the red? because 6% more than disaster is still a disaster.
Working retail on the strip, yes sales are somewhat stablized from what they were this time last year, but last year was down nearly 50% from the prior year, people are spending less this year, and convention events and attendance is also down. More and more upscale retail stores have either gone out of business or are struggling so much that sale events are now popular where before the idea would appall same businesses, now there are more lower end vendors opening stores in once exclusive malls. tourists will continue to visit, gouging their pocket books is not a good idea, It just gives them less to spend in the retail shops, where casinos are also dependent upon the rents. Surviving this recession trickles down to the sales associates who if sales aren't made, the businesses are forced to cut back on employees and or hours, if they can't pay their bills, debt is formed houses are lost and the unemployment rate rises.
Where is everyone? If this wouldda said, "Down 6%", there'd by 150 "I told you so..." posts! Alas, only tvegas is here to represent and attacks the validity of the numbers.
Myforte... excellent comment. We could use some more common sense, straight-talk.
the people wondering about the "conflicting info" need to take a reading comprehension refresher.
The "other story" was about BACCARAT and how it affected the overall take.
HUGE DOUGH is wagered by a RELATIVE FEW on Baccarat. The house edge is skinny. "The House" took it in the shorts for one month.
The Whales Won.
It happens.
$89.54 room rate where is that??? That is comical..
The casinos are not really in the red, they say they are in the red because their sales are not making as much money as they used to. They are by no means going bankrupt.
However, if they keep raising prices because they see a small improvement, my guess is that they will start losing again.

August should be much better. Cosmopolitan put up their sign.
the attraction is gone. the last thing any one wants to do is get on an overbooked full airplane to an overvalued hotel with hidden resort fees and play 6/5 blackjack. leave it to the foreigners, the blue hairs and drug addled wannabes to make up for the masses who cant afford the time or money to make the trip.
