flash point:

Incumbents’ unfair advantage

After doing a program Wednesday on “Face to Face” about politicians and the public airwaves, my conclusion is a simple one: No elected official up for re-election should do PSAs or appear on government-run stations in the calendar year in which they are up. Not after filing — the entire year. Anything else is blatantly unfair to challengers. And the franking privilege should be removed for federal folks for that year. I can hear the lament — the pols need to be on to do their jobs. Hogwash. It’s shameless self-promotion and even if it can’t be outlawed, they shouldn’t do it anyhow. I know — fat chance.
